Karan Johar: ‘The Traitors’ Is Authentic, Real-Time Drama
The versatile Filmmaker Karan Johar has announced that he is hosting a reality show called “The Traitors.” He promises that everything will be real and honest. This way of speaking is quite different from the overdramatized events seen in many reality TV programs which hints at a real and honest style of presenting human relationships.
The Indian edition of this world-famous format is set to bring thrilling psychology to television viewers. The show will be guided by Johar, known for charm and quick understanding of people’s emotions, as he leads celebrities to test trust, deceit and their capacities to betray. There are a few “traitor” players and they must eliminate the others without their identity being found out. Those loyal to the team must track down the traitors before it is too late, working as a team in challenges to win the prize pot.
At a recent press conference, Karan Johar said that everything in the drama is sincere. He admitted that several reality shows show actors who fake their emotions such as forced crying or laughter. But in “The Traitors,” he points out, “There isn’t any of that.” It feels real and you really put your emotions into how you respond, whether you’re let down, hurt, excited or powerful. Being authentic is a big reason why many watch, hoping to see people’s real reactions to high-stress situations.
Johar explained that watching the UK and US versions made him really interested in the format, as he became “opened up, touched, involved and in a state of wonderment at how clever it was.”
His experience with betrayal, with him saying straightforwardly that “traitors have been happening to me all my life” in the industry, also gives him a unique credibility as a host of such a series.
“The Traitors” takes place amid the grandeur of the Suryagarh Palace in Rajasthan – a breathtaking setting for all of the mind games and conspiracy plot twists. The celebrity cast includes a mix of actors, comedians, and social media celebrities, that should generate dynamics and conflicts of all kinds – AND this line-up of familiar people combined with the high stakes of the game means good television.
From All3Media International and BBC Studios India Productions, “The Traitors” will debut on Prime Video on June 12. New episodes will drop every Thursday for viewers. Karan Johar is leading the show, which means that viewers can expect authentic drama to unfold in real-time, and “The Traitors” will be an intriguing addition to Indian reality television that will challenge the contestants and viewers alike, to question everything they thought they knew about trust and deception.
