#CancelNetflix trends on Twitter, know why people are posting against Netflix

A recently released French film has outraged people for its alleged inappropriate content

#CancelNetflix is trending on Twitter and other social media platforms after people thought the content of the French movie Cuties was inappropriate. A petition created on change.org, signed by more than 6,00,000 people, is urging people to cancel their Netflix subscriptions. The petition was created after backlash over the French film Cuties, streaming on Netflix.

What is the controversy?

The French film Cuties started getting noticed after Netflix started promoting the film in August. During the promotion, Netflix used a poster in which an 11-year-old girl is seen wearing shorts and metallic crop top along with three other girls in the background. The description of the film said “Amy becomes fascinated with a twerking dance crew and stars exploring her femininity defying her family’s tradition.” Although the description was edited later to “11-year-old Amy starts to rebel against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew,” people were not happy with it and called it the encouragement of child pornography, and promotion and normalization of pedophilia.

People termed it as child porn and some said the fact that film is meant for people of more than 18 years of age is problematic, as the story in the movie is about an 11-year-old girl.

Another petition on change.org said that the movie is disgusting as it sexualizes an 11-year-old for the viewing pleasure of pedophiles. It also said that the movie can have a negative influence on children. The online petition emphasized that there is no need for such content, especially at a time when sex trafficking and pedophilia is very rampant. The movie was called dangerous content, which has no excuse.”

A a sequence of the movie has gone viral in which four girls in the age group of 11-12 years are performing dance sexy moves along with twerking.

Cuties is a French film about An 11-year-old girl who joins a dance group called Cuties to escape the family dysfunction. The movie had won the directing award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier. The Sundance website described the movie as a “spirited film” that depicts the youthful energy and vulnerability of tweens.”

How has Netflix reacted?

The official Netflix’s Twitter account wrote a public apology for the poster and the description. In the tweet, it said that it was not ok, nor was it representative of this French Film and they have updated description and pictures.

Even after the apology, some people pointed out on Twitter that changing the description and artwork is not enough as the premise of the movie is disturbing. They have called for a ban for the movie and asked Netflix to drop this content.
