Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Dazzles at Cannes 2025 in a Handwoven Banarasi Saree by Manish Malhotra, Celebrating Indian Couture on Global Stage

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made a glorious return to the Cannes red carpet in 2025 and thereby proved, yet again, why she is often referred to as the Queen of the Cannes. This year she looked like a dream and stole everyone’s heart in her daring choice, an exquisite handwoven ivory Banarasi saree by none other than Manish Malhotra. The former Miss World, with her ageless beauty, catapulted Indian couture into the global scenario in a memorable manner.

The 78th Cannes Film Festival saw Aishwarya go against the grain of normal red-carpet dress codes and redefine what Indian ceremonial wear could mean in an international context. It was not simply out of nostalgia that she wore a saree; rather, it was a statement that looked consciously at the future. Her garment hailed the country’s rich handloom legacy and set the standard for modern ethnic glamor.

The ivory saree was created in luxuriously dense drape with rich cultural connotation based on the rare Kadwa brocade weaving technique from the fine city of Varanasi. Each motif on this ancient weaving technique is made individually with painstaking precision, wielding multiple shuttle and extra threads. The saree, adorned with hand-embroidered zari detailing in genuine silver (chandi), celebrated craftsmanship and heritage.

The drape was complemented by a lustrous full-sleeved blouse embroidered to perfection and a sheer white tissue dupatta intricately embroidered with zardozi gold and silver work. Infusing Aishwarya’s icon stature and ambiance with modernity, the ensemble made the grandest visual narrative.

To elevate the look further, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wore Manish Malhotra’s heirloom high jewellery. Over 500 carats of Mozambique rubies surrounded by uncut diamonds in 18k gold provided the perfect counterpart to her royal ensemble. This synthesis of haute couture and grandeur underscored the designer’s notion of global Indian luxury.

Beauty-wise, Aishwarya kept things elegant and classic. She accentuated her famous winged eyeliner, but what made it special in this occasion was her wearing of the sindoor, a first in her entire Cannes history. Allia Al Rufai styled her with understated glam that deeply resonated with both the fans and critics of fashion.

This is not the first time Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has worn a saree at the Cannes red carpet: she had done so in 2002 and 2010. But her high-profile appearance in 2025 feels like a watershed moment. Every thread and shimmer celebrated the legacy of Indian textiles while making a strong statement on a global podium.
