The US President Donald Trump said that he has ended a foolish and previously indefinite war in Syria. Donald Trump on Wednesday said , “We have no soldiers in the area. We are getting out of the endless war.” On Thursday he added that “we are out of Syria, we have been out of there for a while and there are no soldiers whatsoever.”

President Trump defended his decision of pulling US Support from allied Kurdish fighters in Northern Syria. This has made Kurdish fighters vulnerable to a Turkish offensive that began on Wednesday. President while speaking about Kurdish said that they are fighting for their land and they didn’t help us in the Second World War. For example, they didn’t help us in Normandy.”

President’s words came as Turkey began a ground and air offensive against Kurdish fighters in Northern Syria. As per reports more than a dozen Kurdish fighters have been reported killed.

What made Trump say that?

After the White House announced on Sunday that US troops would not defend Kurdish fighters in northern Syria from the military operation of Turkey, Donald Trump faced harsh criticism. Even his Republican allies in Congress and US Military leaders criticized him.

The Syrian Democratic forces which are a Kurdish-led militia in northeastern Syria have been an important ally of the US in the fight against the Islamic state.

Donald Trump was talking about the issue in front of reporters Wednesday when he cited World War II history. The White House didn’t reply to the questions about how Normandy came up or which article President was referring to.

But one possibility was doing rounds on Social Media on Wednesday evening. A Tuesday opinion by Kurt Schlichter, who is a conservative writer and commentator was doing rounds. He wrote, “The Kurds helped destroy ISIS, true” using an alternate name for Islamic State Group. He added that “It’s also true that Kurds would have fought ISIS anyway as the psycho caliphate was right next door.” About Normandy, he wrote the Kurds didn’t stand with the US on Normandy or Khe Sanh or Inchon or Kandahar. He also wrote that the Syrian Kurds became an ally of the US because both the parties shared a common interest of wiping out the head-lopping freak show that was ISIS.

It is uncertain that the Syrian Kurds were there with the US in Normandy, but there is evidence that suggests that some of them fought alongside Allied forces during World War II.

So during World War II, these Kurds fought with the Soviets on the side of the Allies. However, it was difficult to recognize them as they weren’t fighting under a Kurdish flag.

He added that the evidence of this has survived in books and folk songs that pay tribute to Kurds who took part in World War II. He also pointed out that Samand Aliyevich Siabandov- a member of Yazidis (Yazidis are a Kurdish-speaking religious minority) was a popular Soviet fighter who was lauded in an English -language newspaper based in Russia named “Moscow News” in 1946.

How Trump’s mark was decoded?

Many supporters applauded the decision to draw down the US presence in Syria as a step to stop the endless wars. While some of the supporters seemed to avoid wading into President’s statement about Normandy.

There are some people who think that abandoning allies in Syria would allow more violence and embolden rivals.

Critics of US President said that his statement on Wednesday about the World War II combatant status was a strange subject to invoke. It is strange especially because Kurds – are and were – stateless and not a monolith. And in any case, the US is a friend of Japan, Germany, and Italy who were the main Axis power during World War II.
