Meghalaya Murder Mystery: How a Honeymoon Turned into a Chilling Crime and One Mistake Unraveled the Truth Behind Raja Raghuvanshi’s Death
The honeymoon, which has turned out to be a romantic moment for newlyweds Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi in this beautiful place called Meghalaya, soon became one of the most chilling murder mysteries that the region has seen in many years. It unfolded in a suspense thriller mystery where deceit and betrayal were present as well as one slip-up by an important actor of the killing that eventually led to the arrest of the architects behind the killing.
Their marriage took place on May 11, 2025, in the city of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and projected their honeymoon to Kashmir. Plans rapidly changed to Meghalaya, but both were advised to restrict traveling to their initial destination due to increasing safety concerns. On May 22, they cycled down to the popular ‘living root’ bridges located in the village of Nongriat after parking their rented scooter at Mawlakhiyat. Their homestay was the last confirmed sighting before checking out for sightseeing on May 23.
After that both went missing-neither seemed to have been reported. Growing concern ensued when their scooter was discovered abandoned outside a café between Shillong and Sohra the next day. Without waiting for the rains to subside, the Meghalaya Police set off on an extensive hunt.
On June 2, the case took a turn for worst when a decomposed body was retrieved from a gorge near the Wei Sawdong waterfall. The victim was Raja Raghuvanshi, as confirmed by a tattoo on his hand. Post-mortem revealed blunt trauma to the head and an apparent brutal murder but not Sonam.
The evidence led police investigators to the following conclusion. Near the murder scene, some critical evidences were recovered e.g., a female shirt, broken mobile glass, a strip of medicine, and a smartwatch-now following up on the evidences for filing a clear case of homicide.
They were able to uncover a plot far more sinister devised by Sonam along with her lover, the 20-year-old Raj Kushwaha. They had conspired to murder Raja just a week after their wedding. The three hired persons by Raj to carry out the act were Vishal Chauhan, Anand Kumar, and Akash Rajput. In an act of manipulation, Sonam convinced Raja to visit Meghalaya for their honeymoon, putting him in a state of isolation from where the child killers could access him easily.
But why did this plan break down in Meghalaya? The machete used was identified as an unusual device from that one was used by the perpetrators and was not widely found in the region. That started raising suspicions about their involvement from outside. Further, the call records explored by police revealed that Sonam had contacted one of the hired killers just days before the murder – a major breakthrough.

The last location known to Sonam happened to coincide with that of one of the suspects, which resulted in the investigation being widened further into the states. Her trail eventually ended at a dhaba near the Varanasi-Ghazipur road, where she had asked a staff member to lend her his cellphone to connect with her parents, thereby allowing Madhya Pradesh Police to act on the information to track her movements. Taking the help of Uttar Pradesh, she was arrested and placed in a women’s one-stop center for legal aid before she was handed over to Mehglaya police.
Interestingly, while reports say she was arrested at the dhaba, the police stated that Sonam surrendered voluntarily at the Nandganj police station in Ghazipur district.

The investigation got into full steam and arrested almost all the prime accused: Akash Rajput from Lalitpur; Vishal Chauhan from Indore, and Raj Kushwaha, also from Indore. The confessions and digital footprints sealed the case.
What was expected to be a new beginning celebration ended in a devil’s `cold’ murder. The Meghalaya murder has shocked the nation-mostly not for the brutality, but because it involved deception beneath the surface. One fault, one call, a weapon, and a borrowed phone became the clues that exposed a revolting betrayal and brought justice for Raja Raghuvanshi.
