Kolkata Heavy Rain Backlash Disrupts Traffic, Causes Deaths; Hanuman Statue Areas Waterlogged

Kolkata woke up to chaos on Tuesday as heavy rain lashed the city and surrounding areas overnight, leaving streets waterlogged and disrupting normal life. Several areas in the city, including residential neighborhoods, saw water entering homes, causing inconvenience to thousands of residents. The sudden and intense rainfall left commuters stranded as traffic came to a near standstill in key parts of the city, including the Hanuman Statue area, which experienced severe waterlogging.

The Kolkata Police confirmed that at least three people have died due to electrocution in different parts of the city. Among the deceased was 60-year-old Jitendra Singh, who suffered fatal electrocution at Hossain Shah Road around 5.15 am and was rushed to SSKM Hospital, where he was declared dead. The identities of the other two victims have not been revealed yet, as authorities continue their investigations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for further heavy rainfall in the city, citing a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to continue bringing rain to Kolkata and several other districts in south Bengal over the next few days. The city administration is on high alert to manage the situation and prevent further casualties.

Rainfall records show alarming figures for Tuesday morning. According to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Garia Kamdahari recorded an unprecedented 332 mm of rainfall in a few hours, while Jodhpur Park saw 285 mm, Kalighat 280 mm, Topsia 275 mm, Ballygunge 264 mm, and Thantania in North Kolkata received 195 mm of rainfall. These numbers indicate the intensity of the storm and explain the severe waterlogging and traffic jams experienced across the city.

Public transportation has also been severely affected. Metro Railway Kolkata temporarily suspended services on the Blue Line stretch between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar stations due to waterlogging. A spokesperson from Metro Railway stated that halting operations between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations was a necessary step to ensure public safety. Commuters were advised to use alternate modes of transport as city roads remain flooded in many areas.

Authorities are urging citizens to remain indoors unless necessary travel is required. Emergency services, including police and fire departments, have been deployed in waterlogged areas to assist stranded residents and vehicles. Precautionary measures are being taken to prevent electrocution and accidents, especially in areas like the Hanuman Statue locality, which has been significantly affected by flooding.

The heavy rainfall has also impacted schools, offices, and businesses, forcing temporary closures in several parts of the city. Traffic police are managing congested roads, but with large stretches submerged in water, movement continues to remain slow. Residents are reporting difficulties reaching essential services due to road inundation.

The situation in Kolkata underscores the challenges posed by sudden heavy rain and inadequate drainage in certain parts of the city. Officials are closely monitoring water levels in key drainage zones to manage overflow and reduce the impact on residential and commercial areas. With more rainfall expected in the coming days, the city administration is prepared to take additional steps to prevent further casualties and property damage.

As Kolkata deals with the aftermath of this heavy rain backlash, citizens are advised to stay updated on weather warnings and take precautions to stay safe, particularly in waterlogged areas like the Hanuman Statue vicinity. Emergency helplines and local authorities remain on alert to provide timely assistance to residents affected by the flooding.
