Mother and Daughter burnt alive During Kanpur Anti-Encroachment Drive!

Mother-daughter immolated during Kanpur Anti-Encroachment Drive; Police charged 13 people in a murder case.

A Mother and her daughter were burnt alive in Kanpur during Kanpur Anti-Encroachment Drive on 13 February at Dehat Village when the police and administration officials removed encroachments in a thatched house that caught fire and killed both.

To remove encroachments from “gram samaj ” land in Kanpur Dehat’s Madauli village, police, district administration, and revenue officials went there. This is when the incident happened. There are conflicting reports of how Pramila Dikshit, 45, and her 20-year-old daughter Neha met their tragic death. While authorities claim they self-immolated, family members and locals claim their hut was set on fire when the demolition operation was in progress.

They claimed that after receiving a complaint of Encroachment from one Krishna Kumar, the deceased woman’s husband, sub-divisional Magistrate (Maitha) Gyaneshwar Prasad travelled to Madauli village in the Maitha tehsil area early in the morning with police and revenue department staff to remove encroachments from gram samaj land.

The thatched house was among the many homes destroyed by an earthmover that officials brought. According to the villagers, the mother and her daughter were trapped inside and died in the fire. The attempt to save them resulted in severe burn injuries of Krishna Kumar.

Following the incident, hundreds of villagers took to brick-batting, which resulted in the teams being forced to flee quickly. Senior police officers, including ADG (zone) Alok Singh, arrived at Maitha tehsil’s Madauli village, where a large police unit had been stationed because of the brewing tension.

According to a complaint made by one Ashok Dikshit, the house was built on encroached “gram samaj” land, and the family was issued notice to leave the property 5–10 days ago, according to the police.

The police have charged 13 people with murder. Among the accused are the SDM, the station house officer, and the bulldozer operator. They are charged with an attempt to murder and intentionally causing hurt.

Further actions have been taken, including the arrest of the suspected bulldozer driver Deepak and the suspension of the tax officer Ashok Singh, accused of causing the fire. The police detained SDM Gyaneshwar Prasad on Tuesday.
