Ghaziabad to Rishikesh in 120 Minutes? Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Expansion to Uttarakhand in Talks, New Stations Like Roorkee and Khatauli Planned

The idea of traveling from Ghaziabad to Rishikesh in just 120 minutes may soon turn into reality, thanks to the proposed expansion of the Rapid Rail (RRTS) corridor beyond Meerut into Uttarakhand. This ambitious plan is currently under discussion between the central government and the Uttarakhand administration, aiming to transform connectivity between Delhi-NCR and major religious and tourist hubs.

What is the Rapid Rail Project?

The Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) is India’s first semi-high-speed regional rail network, designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h. Currently, it connects Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut, significantly reducing travel time between these cities.

Now, the government is exploring extending this corridor further north—from Meerut to Haridwar and Rishikesh—bringing Uttarakhand into the high-speed transit map.

Ghaziabad to Rishikesh in 120 Minutes – Is It Possible?

While “120 minutes” is an optimistic estimate, current reports suggest that travel time from Ghaziabad or Delhi-NCR to Rishikesh could drop to around 2.25 to 3 hours if the project is approved and completed.

At present, the same journey typically takes 5–7 hours by road, depending on traffic conditions.

So even if the 2-hour mark is ambitious, the Rapid Rail project will still cut travel time by more than half—making weekend trips and pilgrimages far more convenient.

Proposed Route of Rapid Rail Extension

The expansion will likely begin from Modipuram in Meerut, which is the current terminal station of the RRTS corridor. From there, the line is expected to follow the NH-58 corridor, connecting key towns and cities along the way.

Key Proposed Stations:

  • Daurala
  • Sakauti
  • Khatauli
  • Purkazi (near UP–Uttarakhand border)
  • Roorkee
  • Jwalapur (Haridwar)
  • Rishikesh (final stop)

These stations are strategically chosen to improve both regional connectivity and tourism flow.

Why Roorkee and Khatauli Are Important

The inclusion of Roorkee and Khatauli is a major highlight of this plan.

  • Roorkee is home to IIT Roorkee and serves as an important educational and industrial hub.
  • Khatauli, located in Muzaffarnagar district, is a growing town and acts as a key link between western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Adding these stations will not only improve passenger movement but also boost local economies.

Boost for Tourism and Economy

The extension of Rapid Rail to Rishikesh is expected to significantly boost tourism in Uttarakhand. Rishikesh is known as the “Yoga Capital of the World” and a major destination for adventure sports like river rafting.

Faster connectivity means:

  • More weekend tourism from Delhi-NCR
  • Easier access for pilgrims traveling to Haridwar and nearby religious sites
  • Growth in hotels, transport, and local businesses

Current Status of the Project

As of now, the project is in the proposal and discussion stage. High-level meetings have already taken place between state and central authorities to evaluate feasibility, funding, and environmental impact.

The Uttarakhand government has also requested financial support for infrastructure upgrades needed for the extension.

However, final approval, detailed project reports (DPR), and funding allocation are still pending. This means construction timelines are not yet confirmed.

Challenges Ahead

While the project looks promising, several challenges remain:

  • Environmental concerns in eco-sensitive areas like Haridwar and Rishikesh
  • High construction costs similar to the existing ₹30,000 crore corridor
  • Land acquisition and infrastructure integration

Despite these hurdles, the potential benefits make this project a strong candidate for future development.

Final Thoughts

The proposed Ghaziabad to Rishikesh Rapid Rail expansion could redefine travel in North India. Even if the 120-minute claim is slightly optimistic, reducing travel time to under 3 hours would be a game-changer.

With new stations like Roorkee and Khatauli, improved connectivity, and faster travel, this project has the potential to transform tourism, economy, and daily commuting across states.

For now, all eyes are on government approvals—but if things move forward, the dream of a fast, seamless journey from Ghaziabad to Rishikesh may soon become reality.
