CP Radhakrishnan Takes Oath as the 15th Vice President of India at Rashtrapati Bhawan Ceremony
Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan officially assumed office as the 15th Vice President of India after taking the oath at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi. The swearing-in ceremony, held on Friday, was administered by President Droupadi Murmu in the presence of key government leaders, dignitaries, and senior officials. The event marked yet another significant moment in Indian politics, with Radhakrishnan stepping into one of the highest constitutional offices in the country.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who extended warm wishes to the newly elected Vice President, highlighting his commitment to strengthening democratic institutions. Former Vice Presidents Jagdeep Dhankhar and M. Venkaiah Naidu, former President Ram Nath Kovind, Union Ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, and several other dignitaries were present to witness the occasion. Their presence emphasized the importance of the transition and reflected the widespread recognition of Radhakrishnan’s political journey.

A seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu with long-standing associations with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), CP Radhakrishnan was declared victorious in the vice-presidential polls held earlier this week. He secured a comfortable win, garnering 452 votes against Opposition candidate and former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, who managed to secure 300 votes. Out of 781 eligible Members of Parliament, 767 cast their ballots, resulting in an impressive turnout of 98.2 percent. Of the total votes, 752 were declared valid, while 15 were invalid, thereby setting the required majority mark at 377 votes.
Although the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had 427 MPs pledged in its favor, Radhakrishnan’s tally went up by 25 votes more than the base support, thanks to additional backing from other parties and possible cross-voting. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), with 11 MPs, supported the NDA candidate, while speculation grew around Opposition lawmakers crossing lines, as Radhakrishnan ultimately secured 14 more votes than expected. This unexpected gain underscored both his personal goodwill across party lines and the strength of the NDA’s parliamentary strategy.
Following the results, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Vice President-elect and expressed confidence that Radhakrishnan would contribute positively to the democratic discourse of the Rajya Sabha. The Prime Minister emphasized that his experience and commitment to public service would play a crucial role in strengthening parliamentary proceedings and upholding constitutional values.
The election also saw abstentions from 13 MPs who chose not to cast their votes. Among them were seven members from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), four from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), one from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and one Independent MP. Their absence slightly reduced the overall tally but did not impact the NDA candidate’s comfortable victory.

For Radhakrishnan, the elevation to Vice President is the culmination of a long career in public service, having represented Tamil Nadu in Parliament and contributed to various social and political initiatives. Known for his organizational skills and deep-rooted connections with the BJP and RSS, he has often been seen as a bridge between party ideology and governance. His victory not only strengthens the NDA’s influence but also brings a leader from southern India into a top constitutional role, reflecting the growing political representation of the region at the national level.
As the 15th Vice President, CP Radhakrishnan will preside over the Rajya Sabha, where his role as the Chairperson will be pivotal in ensuring smooth legislative functioning. His approach will be closely watched in the coming months, as India navigates key policy debates and parliamentary sessions. With his extensive experience, dedication to constitutional values, and ability to command respect across party lines, Radhakrishnan’s tenure promises to add a new dimension to India’s democratic framework.
