CM Vijay Announces Farm Loan Waiver And Extended Movie Screenings In Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has made headlines after unveiling two major decisions that are expected to impact both the agricultural sector and the Tamil film industry. The announcement came after a high-level government review meeting and discussions with film industry representatives.
The latest move includes a large-scale crop loan waiver scheme for farmers and permission for theatres across Tamil Nadu to conduct five screenings per day for newly released Tamil films. The twin announcements have received mixed but largely positive reactions from farmers, theatre owners, producers, and movie fans across the state.
CM Vijay Announces Farm Loan Waiver For Farmers
The biggest relief package focuses on farmers who have been facing financial pressure due to crop losses, rising costs, and loan burdens. As CM Vijay Announces Farm Loan Waiver, the Tamil Nadu government stated that marginal farmers with cooperative bank crop loans up to ₹50,000 will receive a complete waiver.
According to government data, around 14.22 lakh farmers are expected to benefit from this scheme. The state government is estimated to spend more than ₹2,000 crore on implementing the waiver program.
The relief structure has been designed based on loan amounts:
- Full waiver for marginal farmers with loans below ₹50,000
- 50% waiver for small farmers under certain conditions
- ₹40,000 relief for loans between ₹50,001 and ₹60,000
- ₹30,000 waiver for loans between ₹60,001 and ₹70,000
- ₹20,000 relief for loans between ₹70,001 and ₹80,000
- ₹10,000 waiver for loans up to ₹1 lakh
- ₹5,000 support for larger farmers with higher loan amounts
Officials confirmed that the scheme applies to loans taken between May 2025 and February 2026.
Tamil Nadu Government Allows Five Movie Shows Daily
Along with agricultural relief, the Tamil Nadu government has also introduced a major change for the entertainment industry. Theatres across the state can now screen five shows daily for newly released Tamil films during the first week of release.
Earlier, theatres were generally restricted to four shows per day under Tamil Nadu cinema regulations. Special fifth shows required separate approval from district authorities. The new rule removes this lengthy approval process and gives theatre owners more flexibility.

Industry experts believe the decision will help producers recover investments faster, especially for high-budget films that depend heavily on opening-week collections.
Tamil Film Industry Welcomes The Move
The Tamil film industry has largely welcomed the decision. Producers, distributors, and theatre associations praised the government for supporting cinema businesses that contribute significantly to the state economy.
The decision is especially important for festival releases and big-star movies, where audience demand often exceeds available show slots. Additional screenings could help reduce ticket shortages and improve overall theatre revenue.
Many industry observers noted that Chief Minister Vijay’s background in cinema may have influenced the government’s understanding of industry challenges.
Farmers React To The Loan Waiver Scheme
Farmers’ associations appreciated the government’s effort to reduce agricultural debt. Many small and marginal farmers described the waiver as timely financial support before the upcoming cultivation season.
However, some groups also expressed disappointment, pointing out that broader waivers had reportedly been discussed during earlier political campaigns. Despite this, the announcement is still being viewed as one of the largest farmer relief initiatives in recent months.

Experts believe the scheme could improve rural spending and support local agricultural activities throughout Tamil Nadu.
Economic And Political Impact Of The Announcement
Political analysts believe the combined focus on agriculture and cinema reflects an attempt to balance rural welfare with urban economic growth. Agriculture remains a crucial sector in Tamil Nadu, while the Tamil film industry contributes heavily to employment, tourism, and entertainment revenue.
The decisions may also strengthen public support for the government by addressing concerns from two influential sectors simultaneously.
