China Asserts Territory: New ‘Standard Map’ Includes Arunachal & Aksai Chin

China's recent map release underscores its territorial claims, includes disputed areas, and aligns with its strategic priorities, raising regional tensions. Emphasizing China's assertion of sovereignty over the island.

China releases a 2023 map reaffirming territorial borders and maritime claims, including contested regions and Taiwan.

On August 28, the Chinese government released the 2023 edition of the standard map of China, which includes the regions of Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin within China’s borders. This map, published by the Ministry of Natural Resources, maintains China’s territorial claims on its western borders and the expansive nine-dash line covering the South China Sea, as seen in previous editions. Additionally, a tenth dash is present east of Taiwan, emphasizing China’s assertion of sovereignty over the island.

China’s Diplomatic Maneuvers:

This release comes after China’s decision to rename 11 places in Arunachal Pradesh, including a town near the capital in April. This move was interpreted as a response to India’s activities ahead of the G-20 summit, an event China had expressed opposition to. Chinese President Xi Jinping is anticipated to attend the G-20 summit in New Delhi on September 9-10.

The unveiling of the 2023 map coincided with China’s National Mapping Awareness Publicity Week. In addition to the standard map, the Ministry of Natural Resources will issue digital maps and navigation tools for applications such as location-based services, precision agriculture, platform economy, and intelligent connected vehicles.

This year commemorates the 30th anniversary of China’s Law of Surveying and Mapping, enacted to enhance the management of surveying and mapping efforts, facilitate development in the national economy, bolster national defence, and advance society.

Strengthened Border Measures:

Under President Xi’s leadership, China has tightened control over border regions. In 2022, a new border law was passed, delineating responsibilities for civilian and military entities to protect national sovereignty. The renaming of places aligns with Article 7 of this law, which emphasizes border education across government levels. Article 22 mandates the Chinese military to conduct border exercises and prevent invasions, encroachments, and provocations.
