Ker Puja 2025: Tripura’s Sacred Festival of Protection and Peace

Ker Puja is a yearly religious event that mainly occurs in the Indian state of Tripura involving the native values as well as beliefs of the Tripuri group of people. This is because the 10-worded title of the article, Ker Puja: Guardian Deity Festival of Tripura, briefly summarizes the meaning behind this conspicuous event, touching not only on the geographical location and also putting emphasis on the main aim of the rituals, which is the pleasing of Ker, the guardian deity.

Ker itself is supposed to mean the Kher-thung or the boundary. Thus, the puja is basically a ritual to safeguard the best interest of the people, the land and the outside evils by preparing an impregnable fortification around the state or the community. It is the strong statement of group solidarity as well as a request to God to protect.

This festival or Puja is very exclusive and heavy on restrictions when compared to many other Hindu festivals which are quite open and free in their implementation. It is held after a period of two weeks to the Kharchi Puja which is another important rite observed by the Tripuris. What is most notable about Ker Puja is the outlawing of a severe pabandi or prohibition in a specified area termed as the Ker-Chhim. Entering this area is strictly prohibited during the puja and the puja usually goes on during a period of around two and a half days. No kind of entertainment is permitted, dancing, singing, and lighting fires, amongst others. Pregnant women, the sick and those that just lost a member of the family is normally advised to wait out the Ker-Chhim before the rituals start. Such rule following shows the extreme importance and holiness of the way the puja is performed.

The rituals themselves are held by the so called Ochai, which are the ancient Tripuri priests who are said to play the role of intermediary between the world of people and the world of spirits.

The socio-cultural importance of Ker Puja is much more than its significance as a religious festival. It acts as a reminder of the Tripuri tribe’s relationship with their ancestral land and culture. In today’s social world movements toward globalization, festivals such as this provide opportunities to establish unique cultural identities, framing belonging for a group of people and confirming their ongoing ties to one another. It highlights connectedness and community, given that it is customary for participants to spend several days, sometimes weeks, preparing for the puja. It often ties the community together as they each contribute time and resources to be a part of the puja and its components.

In the past, Ker Puja was especially important to the ruling Manikya dynasty of Tripura, who were sponsors of the puja. In fact, it was often seen as the right of the monarch to initiate elaborate rituals to show due respect to their ancestors, and request not only prosperity but also protection of the land. The puja was an important part of the structure of their kingdom. Presently, when the jurisdiction of Tripura became part of greater India, the regional government now leads the puja, and recognizes the Ker Puja as significant in an effort to minimize disruption to the Puja by sponsoring certain activities.
