Shri Krishna Janmashtami is one of the biggest festivals of the Hindus and it commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The year 2025 will see Janmashtami being celebrated with great fervor and poise in the fraternities it takes place in India as well as abroad among followers. This day is celebrated with prayers, fasting, cultural performances and shimmering of divine pranks and playfulness of Lord Krishna.
Puja Vidhi: How To Do Janmashtami Pooja
The Janmashtami puja commences with devotees fasting a whole day and the puja resumes only after midnight when Lord Krishna is believed to have been born. The shrine of worship is well dressed with flowers, lights as well as pictures or idols of infants Krishna in a cradle. The devotees give out panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar), fruits, sweets and butter, which was a favorite of Lord Krishna.
Midnight is the time when Krishna Janmotsav is observed through blowing of the conch, ringing of the bells, and singing of bhajans. The shrine of baby Krishna is also washed with sacred water and clad in new garments and put on an elaborate cradle. To evoke blessings of God, Bhajans, kirtans, and the reading of Bhagavad Gita are conducted.
Traditions/Cultural Practices
The customs in relation to Janmashtami differ region to region In Mathura and Vrindavan, the childhood town of Krishna, there are large festivals with dance and drama performances of Rasleela which dramatises scenes relating to Krishna. In Maharashtra, Dahi Handi is a festival in which groups of young men climb in human pyramids with the purpose of smashing a pot of curd, hanged at a height, in order to symbolize the playful character of Krishna. In South India, people decorate homes with kolams and small footprints leading to the altar depict the arrival of baby Krishna into the homes of the devotees. Temples arrange special prayers and thousands of devotees attends the rituals to witness the festive effects as it is a very communal affair.

In 2025, Janmashtami celebrations will honor ancient traditions alongside modern elements. Many temples and spiritual organizations will broadcast live pujas for devotees across the globe, and cultural programs throughout the world will be held in person and online. Communities will also involve themselves in charitable works which reflect the essential teaching of compassion and selflessness demonstrated by Lord Krishna.
