Face-Offs With China in Arunachal Pradesh Still Ongoing: ITBP Chief Praises Shaurya Commandos

ITBP chief Shatrujeet Kapoor confirms Arunachal Pradesh face-offs, praises Shaurya Commandos and highlights drone capabilities along the LAC.

ITBP Chief Shatrujeet Kapoor Confirms Ongoing Arunachal Pradesh Face-Offs With China, Highlights Shaurya Commandos, India-China Border Tensions, Line of Actual Control and Drone Capabilities

Tensions along the India-China border remain a significant security concern, with Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor confirming that face-offs with Chinese troops are continuing at multiple locations in Arunachal Pradesh. His statement highlights the challenges faced by Indian personnel along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the importance of strengthening border security.

Kapoor also praised the newly raised Shaurya Commandos for their role during the ongoing confrontations with China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA). His remarks came ahead of the ITBP’s 65th Raising Day, scheduled for October 24, 2026, when the force’s operational readiness and modernisation efforts remain key priorities.

ITBP Chief Confirms Ongoing Face-Offs in Arunachal Pradesh

According to reports published on October 22 and 23, 2026, Kapoor told ITBP personnel that confrontations with Chinese troops had occurred at several locations along the Arunachal Pradesh frontier and that the situation remained ongoing.

The developments underline the complexities of managing a disputed and largely undemarcated border. Differences in how India and China perceive sections of the LAC can lead to patrols encountering one another in sensitive areas, requiring personnel to respond with caution and discipline.

The Arunachal Pradesh face-offs also demonstrate why continuous surveillance, effective communication and well-trained border personnel are essential for maintaining stability. While diplomatic and military discussions remain important, troops deployed in forward areas must be prepared to handle unexpected encounters.

Shatrujeet Kapoor Praises Shaurya Commandos

One of the major highlights of Kapoor’s statement was his appreciation for the Shaurya Commandos, a specialised combat unit established to strengthen the ITBP’s operational capabilities in challenging border environments.

The commandos reportedly demonstrated their skills during the ongoing face-offs with Chinese PLA personnel at multiple locations in Arunachal Pradesh. Their role reflects the growing emphasis on specialised training and rapid responses in difficult Himalayan terrain.

The ITBP plans to expand this capability across its border battalions, giving personnel access to specialised mountain-combat training and improving the force’s preparedness for high-altitude contingencies.

Operating in mountainous regions presents unique challenges, including extreme weather, steep terrain, limited accessibility and logistical difficulties. Specially trained personnel can help the force respond more effectively while maintaining vigilance along sensitive stretches of the border.

India-China Border Security and the Line of Actual Control

The ITBP was established in 1962 and is responsible for guarding India’s frontier with China along the 3,488-kilometre Line of Actual Control. Its personnel operate in demanding conditions across the Himalayan region, where maintaining a strong presence is crucial.

The India-China border has remained a subject of concern, particularly following the deadly Galwan Valley clash in June 2020. That incident exposed the risks associated with confrontations between patrols and reinforced the need for improved training, equipment and operational coordination.

The current developments in Arunachal Pradesh highlight the continuing importance of border preparedness. Alongside the Indian Army, the ITBP contributes to surveillance, patrolling and the management of sensitive border situations.

Maintaining peace in these areas requires a combination of operational readiness, established communication channels and diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

ITBP Strengthens Drone Capabilities and Modern Warfare Training

Modern technology is becoming an increasingly important part of India’s border security strategy. Kapoor said the ITBP had established drone platoons in its border battalions and was training drone pilots while also working on drone development.

The force has received ₹400 crore for modernisation, with approximately 70% earmarked for drone warfare capabilities. An additional modernisation programme worth around ₹4,000 crore has received in-principle approval, including ₹1,000 crore allocated for drone and anti-drone systems.

These investments are intended to improve surveillance, situational awareness and the ability to respond to emerging threats. Drone capabilities can be particularly valuable in mountainous regions where difficult terrain and extreme weather complicate conventional patrols.

The ITBP has also introduced a specialised ‘Strike’ training course to prepare personnel for situations resembling the physical confrontations witnessed during the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. Kapoor said the entire force is expected to undergo this training by the end of 2027.

Underground Shelters and Border Infrastructure Upgrades

Alongside specialised training and technological improvements, the ITBP is focusing on infrastructure at forward border locations. Kapoor highlighted plans to develop underground shelters, explaining that such facilities could offer additional protection during potential conflict.

The force is also improving living conditions for personnel stationed in extreme cold. Measures include insulating barracks, installing solar water heaters and providing generators to maintain electricity supplies in remote locations.

These upgrades are important because effective border management depends not only on weapons and surveillance systems but also on the health, morale and operational readiness of personnel deployed in challenging environments.

Conclusion

The latest confirmation from ITBP chief Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor highlights continuing face-offs along the Arunachal Pradesh border and the importance of strengthening India’s preparedness along the Line of Actual Control. The reported contribution of Shaurya Commandos, combined with expanded drone capabilities, specialised combat training and infrastructure improvements, reflects the force’s modernisation priorities.

As India continues to manage its complex relationship with China, maintaining border vigilance, improving operational readiness and supporting diplomatic engagement will remain essential to regional stability.
