Donald Trump Claims Sundar Pichai Rejected His Proposal to Rename the Atlantic Ocean as Trump Ocean on Google Maps Amid Earlier Gulf of America and Lake America Changes

US President Donald Trump has claimed that Google CEO Sundar Pichai rejected his proposal to rename the Atlantic Ocean after himself or America. According to Trump, Pichai explained that oceans are different from other geographical features because they extend across multiple countries. The comments have attracted attention amid the administration’s earlier efforts to rename major geographical landmarks.

Trump reportedly discussed the proposal during a rally in South Carolina on October 21, 2026. While describing his conversation with Pichai, he suggested that Google would not support the proposed name change. However, neither Google nor Pichai had independently confirmed Trump’s account at the time of reporting.

What Did Donald Trump Say About Trump Ocean?

Donald Trump said he had approached Sundar Pichai to discuss whether the Atlantic Ocean could be renamed the Trump Ocean. According to the president’s account, Pichai declined the request and explained that oceans cover several countries, making the situation different from changing the name of a geographical feature located within the United States.

Trump recalled Pichai responding negatively to the proposal. The president also praised Pichai and Google co-founder Sergey Brin, describing them as highly intelligent individuals.

During the rally, Trump appeared to suggest that he would abandon the idea, asking the audience whether the Atlantic Ocean should simply retain its existing name.

The remarks followed earlier comments in which Trump floated the possibility of renaming either the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean. He had also suggested names associated with America, indicating his interest in having a major water body named after the United States.

Why Did Sundar Pichai Reportedly Reject the Proposal?

The reported disagreement highlights the difference between renaming a geographical feature within one country and changing the name of an ocean shared by numerous nations.

The Atlantic Ocean borders North America, South America, Europe and Africa. Its waters are connected to international trade routes, coastal communities, fishing industries and maritime transportation networks.

Changing its name would therefore involve much broader international considerations than changing the official name used by a single country’s government.

Google Maps relies on official geographical naming sources for its mapping information. Its presentation of geographical names can vary depending on a user’s location and the naming conventions recognised in that region.

Trump’s account suggests that Google was unwilling to extend its earlier approach to an ocean with a much wider international presence. However, the precise details of the conversation remain unverified by the company.
