The result gave India a historic women’s individual recurve gold medal at the Asian Games.

Kumkum Mohod Delivers Under Pressure

The final between Kumkum Mohod and Oh Yejin was closely fought from the beginning. The South Korean archer took the opening set and established an early advantage. Kumkum responded strongly in the following stages, demonstrating excellent accuracy and composure.

The Indian teenager produced a perfect 30 in the third set, hitting three consecutive 10s. That performance brought the contest level and kept her firmly in medal contention.

The fourth set went in Oh Yejin’s favour, leaving Kumkum needing a strong final set. She responded with another perfect 30, forcing the match into a 5-5 tie and setting up the deciding shoot-off.

Historic Shoot-Off Seals the Gold

The shoot-off became the defining moment of the final. Both archers had just one arrow to determine the winner.

Oh Yejin shot an 8, giving Kumkum an opportunity to take control of the contest. The Indian archer remained calm and struck the 10-ring.

That perfect arrow secured the gold medal and created a historic moment for Indian women’s recurve archery. The victory also highlighted Kumkum’s ability to perform when the pressure was at its highest.

First Individual Recurve Gold for an Indian Woman

Kumkum Mohod’s achievement carries major significance for Indian archery. Her victory marked India’s first women’s individual recurve gold medal at the Asian Games.

Before this breakthrough, Indian archers had achieved success in several team and individual categories, but an individual women’s recurve medal had remained elusive at the Asian Games.

At just 17 years old, Kumkum has now become a notable name in Indian archery after delivering one of the country’s most significant performances in the event.

Impressive Journey to the Final

Kumkum’s gold-medal journey included victories over experienced international competitors. In the quarterfinal, she defeated South Korea’s Kang Chaeyoung, an accomplished archer with major international titles to her name.

She then progressed to the semifinal, where she defeated China’s Zhu Jingyi. These victories placed her in the final against another strong South Korean opponent.

She also represented India in the women’s recurve team event alongside Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma. The Indian team defeated South Korea in the final to claim another gold medal.

Kumkum also competed in the mixed recurve team event with Dhiraj Bommadevara. The Indian pair reached the final and secured a silver medal.

Her overall medal tally at the Asian Games therefore included two gold medals and one silver medal, making her campaign particularly memorable.

Olympic Qualification Adds Another Milestone

Kumkum Mohod’s historic performance also had significance for India’s preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

India secured an Olympic quota place in women’s individual recurve through the Asian Games result. However, the quota belongs to India and does not automatically mean that Kumkum herself has been selected for the Olympic team.
