Manipuri Musician Dies After Assault For Objecting To Noise Outside Delhi Home; 7 Arrested In Kilokari, Delhi

A shocking incident in southeast Delhi has led to the death of well-known Manipuri musician and music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh, who allegedly suffered a fatal assault after objecting to noise and a disturbance outside his home in Kilokari village. Delhi Police have arrested seven adults in connection with the case and apprehended a juvenile as the investigation continues.

Manipuri Musician Chongtham Vikram Singh Dies After Assault

According to reports, the incident took place late Sunday night at around 11:30 pm in Kilokari village, southeast Delhi. Singh, who had been living in the area for several years, reportedly objected to a group of men creating a disturbance outside his residence.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicated that the group included delivery workers and workers associated with nearby dhabas and food stalls. The disagreement allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Singh was severely assaulted.

Singh was subsequently taken to Holy Family Hospital in Okhla by his son, Yaiphaba. Despite receiving medical treatment, he later died from the injuries he sustained. A hospital report cited haemorrhagic shock caused by blunt-force trauma as the cause of death, according to The Indian Express.

Seven Adults Arrested, Juvenile Apprehended

Delhi Police have arrested seven men in connection with the alleged assault. One juvenile has also been apprehended, bringing the total number of people detained in connection with the incident to eight.

Reports identified the arrested individuals as Bharat Kumar, Pramod, Ramzan Khan, Deepanshu, Mohan Vishwakarma, Vijay and Mannu. Police said the accused were working at different dhabas and food stalls. The investigation remains underway to establish the precise circumstances of the confrontation and the individual roles of those involved.

Delhi Police officials have assured Singh’s family and members of the Northeast community that appropriate legal action will be taken. Authorities are continuing to examine evidence surrounding the assault and death.

How The Delhi Noise Dispute Escalated

The incident reportedly began when Singh objected to shouting, drinking and general disturbance outside his apartment. According to reports, he went downstairs after noticing the group outside his residence.

The argument allegedly became violent, with Singh being struck repeatedly. Other reports indicate that he was chased toward his apartment before being attacked in the corridor. The exact sequence of events remains part of the police investigation.

Police have not established a racial motive at this stage. Some members of the Northeast community have raised concerns about whether the attack could have involved racial discrimination, but authorities have said the motive and circumstances are still being investigated.

Vikram Singh Was A Pioneer Of Manipur’s Rock Music Scene

The death of Chongtham Vikram Singh has also drawn attention because of his contribution to Manipuri music. Singh was known as a guitarist and music teacher and had worked in Delhi for many years.

He was associated with several prominent bands from Manipur, including Ultra Vires, Phoenix and Eastern Dark. The Indian Express reported that Singh was the lead guitarist of Phoenix during the early 1980s and was regarded as an important figure in the development of Manipur’s rock music scene.

After moving to Delhi, Singh continued his connection with music by working as a private music teacher. His death has therefore affected not only his family but also members of the Manipuri and wider Northeast community in the capital.

Northeast Community Demands Justice

Following Singh’s death, members of the Northeast community and civil society groups expressed grief and demanded a fair and thorough investigation.

The North East Students’ Society, Delhi University, described Singh as a respected Manipuri musician and condemned the alleged attack. Community members have also organised a candlelight march in Delhi, calling for justice and accountability.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of people from the Northeast living in Delhi and other major Indian cities. However, any allegation of a racial motive must be established through the ongoing investigation rather than assumed before the authorities complete their inquiry.
