QR Codes, CCTV, Coach Mitra App And More: Railways’ Plan To Curb Linen Theft On AC Coaches Of Trains

Learn how QR Codes, CCTV, Coach Mitra App and other technologies will help Indian Railways prevent linen theft in AC train coaches.

QR Codes, CCTV, Coach Mitra App And More: How Indian Railways Plans To Stop Linen Theft In AC Coaches With Smart Technology

Indian Railways is taking a technology-driven approach to tackle one of the most common yet costly issues faced in AC coaches—linen theft. Every year, thousands of blankets, bedsheets, pillows, pillow covers, and towels go missing from trains, leading to significant financial losses and inconvenience for passengers. According to recent RTI-based reports, more than 1.27 crore linen items disappeared from AC coaches between 2022 and May 2026, prompting the Railways to introduce stricter monitoring and smarter tracking systems.

To address the problem, Indian Railways is now implementing several digital solutions, including QR Codes, CCTV, Coach Mitra App, and improved monitoring procedures. These measures are expected to improve accountability, reduce theft, and enhance passenger services across the railway network.

Why Linen Theft Is a Major Concern

Passengers travelling in AC coaches receive complimentary linen kits that typically include bedsheets, blankets, pillows, pillow covers, and towels. While these items are meant to be returned before passengers leave the train, many go missing every day.

The repeated loss of linen not only increases operational costs for Indian Railways but also affects the availability of clean bedding for future passengers. In many cases, contractors and bedroll attendants bear the financial burden of these missing items through deductions from their payments.

QR Codes to Track Every Linen Item

One of the biggest changes in the new strategy is the introduction of QR Codes on railway linen.

Each blanket, bedsheet, towel, and pillow cover will carry a unique QR code, making it easier to identify and track every item throughout its lifecycle. Railway staff can scan these codes during distribution and collection, helping them maintain accurate records and quickly detect missing items.

This digital tracking system is expected to reduce manual errors while making linen management faster and more transparent.

CCTV Surveillance in AC Coaches

Another major step is the increased use of CCTV cameras in railway coaches.

CCTV surveillance will help railway authorities monitor passenger movement near coach exits and identify suspicious activities related to theft. The cameras are expected to act as a deterrent while also providing valuable evidence if any incidents occur.

Indian Railways has already announced plans to expand CCTV coverage across passenger coaches as part of broader passenger safety initiatives, while ensuring passenger privacy by placing cameras only in common movement areas.

Coach Mitra App to Improve Monitoring

The Coach Mitra App is becoming another important tool in the Railways’ anti-theft strategy.

The app enables bedroll attendants to digitally record when passengers board and deboard the train. It also allows them to note when linen is issued and when it is collected from each passenger.

With digital records available in real time, railway staff can better track missing linen and identify where losses occur. This reduces dependence on manual registers and improves accountability during every journey.

Better Staff Training and Passenger Awareness

Technology alone cannot solve the problem, which is why Indian Railways is also focusing on operational improvements.

Bedroll attendants are being instructed to remain vigilant while distributing and collecting linen. Staff members are encouraged to remind passengers to return all issued items at least 30 minutes before reaching their destination. Regular counselling, monitoring, and awareness campaigns are also being conducted across railway divisions to reduce losses.

Benefits for Passengers

These initiatives are designed not only to reduce theft but also to improve the overall travel experience.

Passengers can expect:

  • Better availability of clean and fresh linen.
  • Faster and more organized linen distribution.
  • Improved accountability during every journey.
  • Enhanced safety through CCTV monitoring.
  • More efficient digital services using the Coach Mitra App.

Together, these measures aim to ensure that every passenger receives quality service without unnecessary shortages caused by missing linen.

A Technology-Driven Future for Indian Railways

The introduction of QR Codes, CCTV, Coach Mitra App, and digital monitoring reflects Indian Railways’ broader focus on modernization and smarter passenger services. By combining technology with better operational practices, the Railways hopes to significantly reduce linen theft while improving efficiency across AC coaches.

Although these measures may take time to be implemented across the entire railway network, they represent an important step toward protecting railway assets, reducing unnecessary expenses, and delivering a better travel experience for millions of passengers every year. As digital solutions continue to expand within Indian Railways, passengers can expect safer, smarter, and more reliable journeys in the years ahead.
