Luthra Brothers Taken to Bangkok as India and Thailand Move to Complete Deportation Process

Luthra Brothers taken to Bangkok immigration as India and Thailand accelerate the deportation process linked to the Goa nightclub fire case.

Luthra Brothers’ Deportation Process Officially Underway

The deportation of the Luthra Brothers is now formally underway as Thailand begins procedures to hand them over to India. Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, wanted in the Goa nightclub fire that claimed 25 lives, were detained in Phuket and transported to the Bangkok immigration office. Thai authorities confirmed that the brothers will be processed and then transferred to Indian officials, who will escort them back for legal proceedings.

How Thai Police Tracked and Detained the Luthra Brothers

Arrest at Hotel Indigo in Patong

The Luthra Brothers, co-owners of the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, were traced to Hotel Indigo in Patong shortly after fleeing India. Thai police used travel and hotel data to locate them within hours of their escape.

Passport Suspension Enabled Swift Detention

Their passports were suspended by the Regional Passport Office in Delhi after they failed to respond to a notice asking why their documents should not be impounded. Once suspended, their passports became invalid in Thailand, enabling authorities to detain them immediately. They were then moved to an immigration detention centre, with photos showing them in handcuffs confirming their official custody.

Indian and Thai Agencies Coordinating Deportation Timeline

Indian authorities expect the Luthra Brothers to return by the end of the week, although documentation delays could shift the timeline. The Indian embassy in Bangkok is preparing Emergency Travel Certificates, requiring the brothers to complete formalities in the capital. A Goa Police team is already in Phuket to coordinate with Thai authorities.
Goa DGP Alok Kumar stated the deportation will take “a minimum of four days.” Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed a police escort team will bring the brothers back to India. Without direct flights between Thailand and Goa, the two will be flown to Delhi first and then transported to Goa for custodial procedures and interrogation.

Timeline of the Luthra Brothers’ Escape After the Goa Fire

Last-Minute Tickets and an Early-Morning Flight

Investigators found that the Luthra Brothers booked last-minute tickets at 1:17 am on December 7, just hours after the fire erupted around 11:45 pm on December 6. Even as firefighters were battling the blaze, the brothers boarded IndiGo flight 6E-1073 at 5:30 am and fled to Phuket.
Later that morning, Goa Police reached Delhi with arrest warrants, searched their properties, pasted notices, and issued a Lookout Circular. Interpol later released a Blue Corner Notice to track their movements globally.

The Blaze That Sparked the International Hunt

The deadly fire is believed to have started when electric firecrackers hit a wooden ceiling during an event with over 150 attendees. While many escaped, several individuals were trapped in the basement after flames engulfed the exit route. The tragedy killed 25 people and led to the arrest of partner Ajay Gupta and five staff members associated with the nightclub.

India–Thailand Extradition Treaty Helping Accelerate the Process

Officials highlighted that the India–Thailand extradition treaty, operational since 2015, has greatly streamlined cooperation in cases like this. The treaty enabled Thai authorities to respond rapidly to India’s request, simplifying legal procedures around detention and deportation. Both countries are now working to finalize the repatriation of the Luthra Brothers as quickly as possible.
