Chum Darang Rejects Stereotypical Roles After Bigg Boss 18 and Advocates for Better Representation in the Industry
Chum Darang, a rising star from Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, is making waves for reasons that go far beyond her appearance on Bigg Boss 18. In a recent interview, the actress shared her candid thoughts on representation, discrimination, and the need for real change in the Indian entertainment industry.
While her time in Bigg Boss 18 brought her national visibility, Chum has remained true to her values, turning down roles that perpetuate harmful stereotypes. “I’m getting a lot of offers but those are not very nice,” she revealed, highlighting the limited and often prejudiced scope of the roles offered to actors from the Northeast. Despite the flood of offers post-Bigg Boss 18, Chum refuses to compromise on her principles, especially when it comes to the representation of her community.
Chum has been vocal about the discrimination she has faced, both subtle and direct, in the entertainment space. “With a face like this, I think discrimination has walked along,” she admitted bluntly. She noted that many people still lack awareness of the Northeast, contributing to narrow casting and bias. Her experience reflects a broader issue—actors from the region are often stereotyped or underrepresented, making it harder for them to carve a place in mainstream media.

However, Chum is not one to dwell in discouragement. Instead, she has turned her frustration into a powerful voice advocating for inclusivity and change. “I’ve been saying this for a very long time that inclusivity should be there. It’s high time,” she said. “This is a very important medium. Everyone watches cinema and television. So if inclusivity is done right, it will reach the masses and make people more aware.”
She emphasized the need for risk-takers within the industry—people who are willing to challenge the status quo and bring fresh narratives to the screen. “We need risk takers to change this narrative. If we are willing to accept change and if we are willing to risk even a little bit, then things would definitely change,” she shared.
Chum’s commitment to authenticity doesn’t stop at words. She has made it clear that she would never accept a role that stereotypes people from the Northeast. “I would not want to do stereotypical roles,” she affirmed. “If I agree to do something that doesn’t meet my standards, I would never do that. Then they keep writing the same things for people like us.” Her strong stance is not just about personal pride but about setting an example for future actors from her region.

In addition to acting, Chum is using her voice to empower others through meaningful collaborations. One of her latest associations is with Glow & Lovely’s campaign ‘Apni Roshni Baahar La’, a nationwide initiative aimed at encouraging women to lead with authenticity and purpose. “It is a beautiful campaign,” she said. “It speaks about bringing your inner light out and being a part of this campaign makes me happy. It is something so important that everybody has to understand and inculcate in their daily lives.”
Through both her career choices and public statements, Chum Darang is creating space for a more inclusive entertainment industry. Her journey post-Bigg Boss 18 is not just about fame, but about challenging biases, celebrating identity, and inspiring a more equitable future for actors from all regions of India.
