Fasting and Rituals are Part of Sawan Shivratri Vrat Vidhi

The Sawan Shivratri Vrat is regarded as a spiritually fulfilling event. This is how followers of the traditional vrat vidhi observe it.

  • Trayodashi Tithi (The day before Shivratri)- To get their bodies and minds ready for the fast, devotees only eat once.
  • This is Shivratri Sankalp– On the day of Shivratri followers make a sankalp (promise) to worship Lord Shiva and fast all day long after taking a morning bath. While some people observe the fast with milk and fruits, most people observe it without food or water (nirjala).
  • Evening Bath and Puja- The Shiva Puja is performed at night after a second bath. Offerings such as belpatra milk honey curd water and dhatura are made by devotees during temple visits or during Shivling abhishekam at home.
  • Shivratri Night Vigil (Jaagaran)- Numerous people read Shiva texts and recite Om Namah Shivaya while staying up all night.
  • Cracking the Parana (Breakfast)- The following morning ideally between sunrise and the end of Chaturdashi Tithi the vrat is completed. Some customs though would rather hold off until Chaturdashi is over.

Spiritual Significance of Sawan Shivratri

Legend has it that Lord Shiva ate the poison Halahala to save the universe when the ocean was churning (Samudra Manthan). Sawan is a celebration of this act. In an effort to obtain the Shivlings blessings of prosperity, health and tranquility devotees fast and present him with milk and water.

Hariyali Amavasya, another significant festival, is celebrated immediately after Sawan Shivratri particularly in North India. It is closely associated with agricultural and seasonal changes and signifies the beginning of monsoon-related rituals.

The 23rd of July 2025 is Sawan Shivratri, a powerful time to commune with Lord Shiva. Devotees can obtain inner strength and divine blessings by conducting the proper rituals and keeping the fast with devotion. This holy night is an opportunity to meditate, cleanse and synchronize with Mahadev’s cosmic energy regardless of whether you’re fasting or participating in temple ceremonies.
