Born on January 4, 1939, into the Mankapur royal family, Anand Singh was the son of Raja Raghvendra Pratap Singh, a former legislator from the Swatantra Party. He received his early education from Colvin Taluqedar College in Lucknow and went on to earn a degree in Agriculture from Allahabad Agricultural Institute. He returned home to manage his family’s landholdings before eventually transitioning into active politics.

Following the untimely death of his father, Anand Singh entered public life and was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in the 1960s. He went on to serve four terms as Member of Parliament from Gonda—in 1971, 1980, 1984, and 1989.

In 2012, Anand Singh staged a successful political comeback by winning the Gaura Assembly seat on a Samajwadi Party ticket. He served as Uttar Pradesh’s Agriculture Minister under the Akhilesh Yadav government from 2012 to 2017. During his tenure, he implemented various schemes aimed at supporting farmers, improving irrigation, and expanding agricultural credit availability.
He was nicknamed “UP Tiger” due to his assertive leadership and ability to sway regional politics. His stature was such that political parties often deferred to his decisions while fielding candidates in the Gonda district.
A political family with a continuing legacy
Anand Singh was married to Veena Singh, the daughter of former Rajya Sabha member Bindumati Devi. Together, they had four children—three daughters and one son. His son, Kirti Vardhan Singh, is currently the Member of Parliament from Gonda and serves as Minister of State for External Affairs, Forest and Environment. The family continues to hold a powerful influence in regional and national politics.
