Prasidh Krishna OUT, 3 IN: India’s Likely Lord’s XI

With the much anticipated third Test match against England at home ground of Lord like cricket field, the Indian cricket team is expected to undergo a major change in the pace bowling category. Few pacer Prasidh Krishna, who has lacked rhythm and bled runs in the first two Tests, is likely to make way to three important additions. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is set to return to India and their skipper Shubman Gill has revealed that Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep will play a crucial role, especially in a possible deadly pace combination at the Home of Cricket.

The recent shows of Prasidh Krishna are being questioned, especially his economy rate that is one of the worst by pacers in the history of Test cricket. His failures to establish consistent lines and lengths in English conditions have brought India to a difficult position to put pressure on the opponents hard in spite of the support given by the selectors and the team management on his ability to hit the deck bowling. His costly outings in the initial two Tests such as the giving away of plenty of runs in quick bursts have brought him under the limelight.

India is blessed with a huge plus that is the return of Jasprit Bumrah. During his workload management measures, the decision to rest Bumrah in the second Test was criticized but quite obvious to ensure that he gets fresh in time to play in major matches. His bouncing, swift bowling, and incisive spells are his talents which will be so much valued at Lord. The fact that Gill has confirmed the presence of Bumrah also implies that the management of the team considers the Lord Test as one of the most important games to create some momentum in the series.

The third player is probably Akash Deep. He showed real spirit in the second Test as Bumrah’s replacement, effectively working with both new and old ball. Akash Deep gives you some good change from Bumrah and Siraj due to his ability to consistently break partnerships. His continued input will provide a solid, potential seam option. An inclusion like Akash Deep is a solid third seam option, especially for long spells to put pressure on the English batters.

While it is the immediate changes in the pace department which got the headlines, the total balance of the Indian XI picked for Lord’s will be key. The batting group of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant will have to have no shortage of significant contributions if they are going to allow the bowlers to work with enough runs. Ravidra Jadeja will still remain the leading spin option for control and crucial breakthroughs.

The decision to bench Prasidh Krishna feels a bit harsh on the person, but this decision illustrates India’s clearly goal to select their most effective and in-form bowlers for this Test match of significance like Lord’s. Bumrah, Siraj and Akash Deep will be a challenge for the English batting unit.

Even in the second Test, when Bumrah could not be found, Mohammed Siraj has done well in leading the attack, and he should be maintained. In such situations, his ferocious spells and skill of grabbing wickets at the important times have proven to be bright spots of the Indian side.
