AAIB Begins Black Box Analysis After Air India AI171 Crash

Black box data is now being examined, the government announced on Thursday, as the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) started analyzing the recordings recovered from the crash site of Air India Flight AI171, which went down shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad on June 12.

Recovery and Transportation of the Black Boxes

Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) recovered from the Ahmedabad crash site (one from a rooftop on June 13 and the other from the debris on June 16) and flown to Delhi as part of a formal investigation initiated in accordance with international protocols. 

Role of AAIB and Airlift by Indian Air Force

According to the government the crash investigation is presently being carried out by the AAIB which is the designated authority for such investigations. 

The Indian Air Force (IAF) airlifted the devices (CVR and FDR) to Delhi on June 24 after they were secured under CCTV surveillance and 24-hour police protection, the government said on Thursday. 

Arrival of the Black Boxes at the AAIB Lab

On June 24 2025 IAF planes flew with complete security from Ahmedabad to Delhi carrying the black boxes. On June 24 2025 at 1400 hours the Director General (DG) of the AAIB brought the front black box to the AAIB lab in Delhi according to the statement. 

It further stated A second AAIB team brought the rear black box which arrived at the AAIB lab in Delhi at 1715 hours on June 24. 

Beginning of the Data Extraction Process

The government’s statement also verified that the memory module was accessed and data extraction got underway at the AAIB lab in Delhi that same evening. 

The data extraction process was started on the evening of June 24 2025 by the team headed by the AAIB DG and including technical personnel from both the AAIB and the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The statement stated that the memory module was successfully accessed and its data downloaded at the AAIB lab on June 25 2025 after the Crash Protection Module (CPM) was safely removed from the front black box. 

Formation of the Multidisciplinary Investigation Team

In compliance with established guidelines the AAIB formed a multidisciplinary team and began an investigation on June 13th it said.

Status of the Recovered Data and Ongoing Analysis

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) the government explained the team looking into the black box was assembled in accordance with international standards and is headed by the Director General of AAIB. It also includes technical experts from AAIB the US NTSB, an aviation medicine specialist and an air traffic control (ATC) officer. 

According to the CVR data from its memory module had been successfully recovered by June 25. 

The government also stated that analysis of the CVR and FDR data is now in progress with the goal of reconstructing the events that led to the accident and determining the factors that contributed to it in order to improve aviation safety and stop similar incidents in the future.

Adherence to International and Domestic Aviation Rules

In compliance with ICAO Annex 13 and the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules 2017 India a signatory to the ICAOs 1944 Chicago Convention conducts aircraft accident investigations. 

The government came to the conclusion that all actions had been taken in a timely manner and in complete compliance with both domestic and international laws.
