Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters Brings BTS, BLACKPINK, and Other K-pop Icons to Life in a Fantasy World of Music and Monsters
Fans of K-pop and animated series are already buzzing with excitement due to Netflix’s latest animated series KPop Demon Hunters. A teaser had recently dropped, heightening the anticipation towards dynamic storylines, colorful visuals, and characters that draw heavily from real-life K-pop stars. Slated to officially release on Netflix on June 20, the series follows the exhilarating double lives of a popular girl group who not only slays the stage but also secretly hunts down demons when the curtain falls.
Director Maggie Kang, in a recent interview with Forbes, validated what the fans had speculated on-KPop Demon Hunters indeed draws inspirations from some of the iconic K-pop groups like BTS, BLACKPINK, Stray Kids, and the rest. Kang has stressed the fact that each character was purposely designed to be a caricature of prominent attributes that can easily be recognized within K-pop groups. She pointed out that fans can very often imagine different types just among the members of each group, such as the “muscular one,” the “maknae,” or the “sweetheart,” which somehow influenced the character development and personality of the demon-fighting chaps in the series.

Maggie Kang’s very own growing-up experiences with earlier Korean pop bands such as H.O.T. and Seo Taiji and the Boys contributed a great deal to the show’s artistic direction. One of the most enthralling aspects of KPop Demon Hunters has to be the conception of the fictive male demon group known as The Saja Boys, comprised of members inspired within the likes of BTS, ATEEZ, Tomorrow X Together, BIGBANG, Monsta X, and Stray Kids. The vibe of each of these guys, their styles, and attitudes are derived from different K-pop corners which instantly connect with fans of the genre.
Interestingly, while most members draw their inspirations from K-pop influences, there is one standout member called Mystery, who is rather unique. According to Kang, this particular member was not inspired by any K-pop group but was inspired by anime aesthetics, thereby adding one extra layer of vast diversity and visual dynamism to the cast.
