Axiom-4: India’s Shubhanshu Shukla Blasts Off for ISS Today!

The formal countdown to Axiom-4 starts of a momentous occasion of the first commercial astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) is on the cards since Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will pilot the mission. On a variety of delays, the launch is now set at today, 25 June 2025, at 12:01 PM IST using Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida of NASA.

Indian air force pilot Shubhanshu Shukla is a geriatric veteran whose contribution to India towards becoming an Indian participating in human spaceflight is a watershed moment. Besides being a pilot of the Axiom-4 mission, he is also among four astronauts picked to take part in the first Indian manned space flight Axiom-4. His involvement in Project Axiom-4 is an invaluable experience as well as a one-of-a-kind platform through which India can take a step further in the development of its space exploration ambitions.

The Shukla and his international crew mates will include Mission Commander Peggy Whitson (USA), a former NASA astronaut and Axiom Space-Director of Human Spaceflight, Mission Specialist Tibor Kapu from Hungary, and Mission Specialist S lwosz Uzna-Wi- sciewskI-Poland) Shukla and his international crew mates will undertake a 14-day mission to the ISS aboard a new SpaceX Dragon spacecraft launched with a Falcon 9 rocket.

This is an indication of the growing part that commercial space ventures are playing in terms of widening access to space. On the head of this new age, with a companion to NASA and SpaceX, Axiom Space plans to perform scientific research, technology demonstrations, and prepare the development of future private space stations.

In their tenure in the ISS, the Axiom-4 crew is expected to conduct approximately 60 science activities and experiments by representing 31 countries. In the case of Shubhanshu Shukla, this is done with a number of experiments at the behest of Indian agencies, especially with regard to space nutrition, and life support systems under the aegis of ISRO and Department of Biotechnology (DBT), including the NASA.

These experiments are important for understanding how microgravity affects biological processes, and develop sustainable life support elements for long-term missions.

Shukla has also expressed plans to bring some hopes from different regions of India to the ISS, and he has even talked about serving Indian food to his fellow astronauts, which also represents a cultural exchange aspect of the mission.

The Axiom-4 mission is significant for many reasons, but perhaps the most historically important, is that it will be India’s first human spaceflight in more than four decades, after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma completed his mission in 1984. It signifies India’s commitment to advancing its space program with a renewed partnership focus on working with other nations, and to the cornerstones of research and discovery for scientific knowledge. The completion of this first mission will likely encourage many more such missions, and will position India among the world space powers, giving space enthusiasts from India an opportunity to follow their dreams for the future. As the last hours approach for the launch of Axiom-4, the world is watching to see Shubhanshu Shukla and his crew take to the skies.
