Uncontrolled Crowds and Chaos: How the Bengaluru Stampede Unfolded During RCB’s Win Parade
Bengaluru Stampede Turns RCB’s IPL Victory Celebration Into Tragedy
What should have been a historic celebration was marred by the Bengaluru stampede. An enormous gathering to commemorate Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) first Indian Premier League (IPL) championship turned tragic on Wednesday night when a stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium left 11 people dead and more than 30 injured.
Authorities report that young people both male and female made up the majority of the fatalities with several of them being students.
The Bengaluru stadium can hold 35000 people but only two to three lakh showed up according to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Nobody had anticipated so many people attending the match which took place last Tuesday evening and today Wednesday. The cricket association organized the event.
Why did the Stampede in Bengaluru Occur?
Siddaramaiah gave an explanation of the stampede’s precise cause stating that a large number of people and inadequate coordination were to blame for the tragedy.
There are little gates. Through the gates the people came in. There has been a stampede since they broke the gates as well. There was a larger crowd than anyone had anticipated. On the surface it appears that way. I’m not saying that nothing has occurred. He continued The investigation will reveal facts.
Over 1.5 lakh people were at the gates banging and eventually making their way through in some areas. The stampede was caused by an attempt to enter the stadium.
The crowd was larger than anyone had anticipated according to deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar who described the situation as completely out of control.
What were the Officers Saying?
We couldn’t control the crowd. We used force but it was excessive, a senior police officer said.
Approximately 50000 people gathered within a one-kilometer radius of the stadium according to police and many of them attempted to push through gates of scale barriers.
At times we were forced to use a lathi charge. The tragedy was brought on by crowd pressure and the stadium’s narrow gates, the official continued.
By the afternoon thousands of spectators had gathered around the stadium. Police estimate that between two and three million people attended despite the stadium’s 35000 capacity. Due to crowd pressure officials had to close all gates by 3:30 PM.
Fans are seen pushing and shoving one another in a number of images and videos taken at the scene. In numerous photos RCB supporters can be seen yelling RCB RCB as they attempt to scale walls and scale gates to gain entry.
The stadium was open to those with valid tickets for the celebrations but many people tried to cram themselves in alongside those with free passes and tickets. A police officer reported that some of them also began pushing one another in their attempt to gain entry.
Other videos from the scene showed people scaling trees and cars to try to get a glimpse of the celebrations that were still going on. Mild force was also used by police to control the swarming crowds.

Uncertainty Regarding Free Passes and Parade Timing
Among other things, the Bengaluru traffic police’s announcement in the morning that there would only be a celebration inside the stadium and no victory parade caused confusion over the event’s plans.
But the RCB management announced on social media at 3:14 PM that a parade would in fact take place at 5 PM with stadium festivities to follow. Additionally they made limited free pass announcements online.
Many of the fans who arrived at the stadium without tickets or hoping to obtain passes were perplexed by this conflicting messaging.
We were informed in the morning that passes were available for purchase. We were later informed that they would be given out at the stadium. Like me a lot of people came up here in the hopes of getting away with it said Rakesh Prakash, a software engineer.
A thorough investigation into the incident has been mandated by the state government.
