How Ethel Caterham, the World’s Oldest Woman, Found Longevity Through Peace and Simplicity

Ethel Caterham’s Secret to 115 Years: A Life Lived Without Arguments

Ethel Caterham, a British woman who is 115 years old is the oldest living person in the world. August 21 1909 was her birthdate which was even before World War I. Her motto for living a healthy life hasn’t changed despite the fact that many things around her have such as nations borders and technologies. It is: Avoid arguing with people at all costs. I pay attention and follow my interests. She abides by this golden rule to live a healthy life.

The second youngest of eight siblings, she was born in Shipton Bellinger, a small village in southern England. She explains that handwritten letters were popular at this time and horse-drawn carriages were common. She has witnessed numerous events such as the emergence of the internet, two World Wars and numerous other historical shifts. But it was her mantra that helped her stay composed.

She also worked as a nanny in India for a while when she was eighteen. She stayed there for three years before returning to England and relocating to Hong Kong and Gibraltar after marrying Norman, a British army major.

She disclosed that she found that traveling helped her decompress. There was something fresh about it and respecting other cultures while remaining loyal to her own helped her remain composed. Traveling to new locations has also been linked to improved mental health according to studies. Because it helped you relax and heal your mind while also relieving the stress and strain of your professional life.

It also serves as a regular reset boosting your focus, creativity and mental strength.

How to Live a Long and Healthy Life?

115-year-old British woman Ethel Caterham has quietly walked her path – without arguing without fuss – and survived to become the oldest person in the world (according to the Gerontology Research Group) in a world full of chaos, stress and constant noise.

Ethel was born August 21 1909 before the First World War even started. Even though a lot has changed around her including wars, technology and lifestyle choices her motto has remained constant: Never argue with anyone. I do what I enjoy and I pay attention. She claims that her secret to living a long life is this one rule.

Living Through History and Being Born in a Simpler Era

The second youngest of eight siblings Ethel Caterham was born in the southern English village of Shipton Bellinger. Handwritten letters and horse-drawn carriages were common in 1909. Her early years were characterized by routine simplicity and a strong sense of family values. She witnessed two World Wars, the emergence of the internet and innumerable shifts in world history but she never lost her composure.

Many people are unaware of the foundation that is created by that kind of consistent presence over time which keeps the body and mind resilient.

A Nomadic Lifestyle Without any Restlessness

Ethel left home at the age of 18 to work as a nanny in India. It was more than just a job; it was an indication of her audacity and curiosity. She lived there for three years before going back to England. After marrying Norman, a British army major, she later lived in Gibraltar and Hong Kong.

Traveling can be stressful but for her it was a way to experience new things and learn about other cultures while maintaining her own sense of calm. When Norman died in 1976 she continued to live a strong, quiet and elegant life while raising her two daughters in the UK.

One Rule: Dont argue

Ethel was recently interviewed from her care facility in Surrey where she was asked how she managed to live such a long life. Her response was succinct but impactful.

Never quarrel with anyone. I do what I enjoy and I pay attention.

This concept isn’t merely outdated. According to modern psychologists long-term stress rage and emotional disputes can decrease immunity, hasten aging and increase the risk of heart disease. Over time Ethel’s strategy of avoiding pointless arguments and avoiding drama may have actually contributed to the preservation of her physical and mental well-being.

What Ethel has experienced is validated by contemporary research. Longer lifespans are typically attained by those who handle stress with emotional stability and fewer conflicts. Chronic illness is known to be influenced by inflammation which is linked to ongoing emotional conflict.

In this way Ethel’s quiet wisdom is supported by science and is not just personal. She probably eased the burden on her heart and mind by opting for peace.
