Neeraj Chopra Answers Critics with Record-Breaking Throw in Doha
For Neeraj Chopra it was a unique day at the track. For the first time in his storied career – which includes gold and silver at the Olympics gold medals at the Asian and Commonwealth Games and Diamond League and World Championship honors – Neeraj entered a major competition with his off-field issues making more headlines than his javelin.
Off-Field Controversy Overshadows Competition
The tension along the India-Pakistan border caused the Neeraj Chopra Classic, a tournament that bears his name to be canceled. Prior to and following that the champion javelin thrower was subjected to a barrage of incisive inquiries regarding his relationship with Arshad Nadeem the Olympic champion from Pakistan. Neeraj had to go on record on the eve of the Diamond League to say that he and Arshad were never close friends and that their relationship is no longer the same.
Breaking the 90-Meter Barrier

With his sixth and final throw which measured 91.6 meters Weber however reversed the trend and won first place. Prior to Weber’s last try Chopra was ahead.
Silencing the Doubts
Neeraj claimed that it relieved millions of Indians including those who questioned whether he would ever be able to throw the javelin farther than ninety meters.

Still Room to Grow
Although I am thrilled to have reached the 90-meter mark, the experience is actually a little bittersweet. I’m still working on a few aspects of my throw with my coach though so whatever. We only began collaborating in February of this year. Following the event Chopra remarked I am still learning things.
Overcoming Injury
The past few years have been filled with constant groin pain. As a result I did not give it my all. In the events leading up to the World Championships this year I think I can throw more than 90 meters because I feel much better this year and we will work on a few things Neeraj told reporters in Doha.

Tokyo will host the World Championships from September 13–21.
Aiming Even Higher
My next goal is just 90m Chopra said when asked what his next objective is now that he has broken the 90-meter mark. I think that I’m prepared to throw farther. A lengthy season is just getting started.
I am thrilled to have Jan Zelezny as my coach and we put in a lot of effort in South Africa. Some aspects are still being worked on.
