Boycott ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ Trends on X Due to Copying Claims, Aamir’s Silence
Aamir Khan’s upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par is currently being met with a considerable amount of backlash on social media, with the trending hashtag of #BoycottSitaareZameenPar on X (formerly Twitter). The backlash has surfaced for from two primary bases; allegations of plagiarism and politically sensitive timing on behalf of the film marketing.
For one, netizens have believed that Sitaare Zameen Par is a near scene-for-scene remake of the 2023 Hollywood film Champions, which is a direct remake of the 2018 Spanish film Campeones. The similar storylines of a disgraced basketball coach who is charged with training a team with individuals with intellectual disabilities, strongly correlate with Champions. Critics believe that there is no originality whatsoever in Sitaare Zameen Par which launched a call for a boycott.
A hashtag, #BoycottSitaareZameenPar, is currently trending on ‘X’, previously known as Twitter, mostly because of the allegations of “Sitaare Zameen Par,” an upcoming movie by Aamir Khan that is claimed to be a direct and unoriginal remake of the 2023 Hollywood film “Champions”. This Hollywood movie was based on the 2018 Spanish movie ‘Campeones’.
Netizens who saw the trailer of “Sitaare zameen par” were fast to notice the striking plot, narrative structure, and even some scenes similarity with “ Champions” trailer. Both films centre on a disappointed basketball coach who is administered by the courts to coach a team of intellectually disabled people.
Numerous people on ‘X’ are complaining and blaming Aamir Khan, who is famous for his careful and fresh narrative, for his lazy “scene-to-scene” copy, which involves no substantial new pieces or creative impulses. The feeling is that this is “lazy storytelling masked as inspiration”. Some have jokingly named Aamir Khan as a “copy-paste perfectionist”, loosely referencing the latter’s earlier movie ‘ Laal Singh Chadda’ which was also a re-make of “Forrest Gump”.
Pouring oil on fire, some users do not understand the necessity of a direct remake since the original and its remake in Hollywood are already there to be viewed by the audience. They are of the view that Bollywood should not just be following other people’s footsteps but also come up with original content.
Curiously, the name of the initial movie “Sitaare zameen par” is mentioned on such websites as Wikipedia and IMDb as based on the 2018 Spanish movie “Campeones”. This understanding though has not calmed the backlash. Instead it has resulted to questions as to whether this is a genuine adaptation or just a bad cover up.
Moreover, certain netizens are focusing on the silence of Aamir Khan on some recent national happenings, as compared with his promotions to this film. This has sparked cries of opportunism and insensitivity which has continued to lead to calls for a boycott.
