Innovation for All: Celebrating World Telecommunication Day’s Digital Progress
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is celebrated every May 17 to commemorate the significance of ICTs in promoting society as established by the global community. The day celebrates the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1865. Celebrating World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2025 as “Connecting Generations”, attention will go to the role of technology in bringing generations together.
When the world continues to become more interconnected globally, information and communication technologies (ICTs) play a crucial role in building vibrant social connections, aligning the economy, contributing to education, and enhancing the health outcome. Such innovations as smartphones, fast internet, and have transformed our daily life, work and means of communication at core level. Though many have welcomed the digital age, not all people have gained equally from the benefits. There is an ever increasing divide in digital opportunities with older folk and communities whilst served poorly by their lack of access or competency with technology.
The “Connecting Generations” theme explains why it is essential to tackle this digital divide. It is crucial to bridge the gap between those who grow up with technology and those less experienced in creating inclusive harmonious communities. Technology allows older adults the chance to keep family ties together, access essential information regarding health and finances, and join in the online economy more equally. Meanwhile, the sum of knowledge and practical experience of the older generation is a valuable lesson for making technologies easier to use and accessible to all.
WTISD 2025 serves as an arena to examine and advance schemes that strive to promote digital inclusion for people of all ages. Activities include making technologies accessible, establishing interfaces that are user-friendly, providing age-specific digital training, and supporting a cost-effective access of internet and devices.
The potential impacts of effectively bridging our generations through technology is vast. For older adults, technology can enable decreased social isolation, increased access to services (healthcare, banking) and further opportunities for lifelong learning and participation. For younger generations, it can afford opportunities to learn from their older counterparts, who hold a wealth of knowledge and experience that can foster more empathy and understanding. Technology that connects the generations in digitally inclusive ways opens doors to new innovation, economic stimulation and advancement.
The theme this year also points towards the future of collaborative work between the generations to shape the digital world. When generations work together, we can ensure that the future development of all technology and connectedness is inclusive, moral, and addresses the workforce and societal needs in a true representation of the sum of its parts; as it integrates elements of data privacy, online safety, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence utilizing the perspectives of everyone in society regardless of age.
