5 reasons why Rohit Sharma is the best captain India never had

Despite having very impressive numbers as captain, Rohit is yet to become the Indian captain

When the squad for Australia tour was announced, cricket fans were shocked to know that they were not able to find the limited-overs vice-captain’s name in the team. Yes, Rohit Sharma, the man who scored 5 centuries in the World Cup 2019 was missing from the squad. BCCI and selectors had to face lots of questions from the cricket fans over the absence of Rohit Sharma. The board tried to clarify that Rohit was missing because of injury, but people were not convinced.

They were not convinced because Mumbai Indians had announced that Rohit Sharma will be playing IPL matches from 3 November onwards. Rohit didn’t just come back into the IPL team, but also led his team to the 5th IPL title. Since then, the conversation regarding Rohit as a captain in white-ball cricket has come back into the news. Later, Rohit Sharma was included in all the formats.

Virat Kohli is currently leading the Indian cricket team in all formats and Rohit Sharma is the vice-captain. While you are wondering if Rohit Sharma should be captain of the Indian team in the ODIs and T20s, we are going to tell you 5 reasons why Rohit Sharma is the best captain India never had.

1. Rohit Sharma has an amazing captaincy record in IPL

Rohit Sharma has led Mumbai Indians to the IPL trophy for 5 times, most by any team. While there are some teams who have never won a single IPL trophy, Rohit Sharma has never lost in finals. The best thing is that he did all this without compromising on his numbers as a batsman. He is on 4th number in the list of most run-scorers in the IPL and has 39 half-centuries on his name.

2. Hitman doesn’t shy away from making sacrifices for his team

Rohit Sharma can take a lot of pride in his batting stats, but his performances in IPL since 2017 has not justified his talent, skill and execution. In 2017, when openers of MI were struggling, many had suggested him to open for the franchise like he does for the national team. He had said that he was ready to take any role which suits the team most. If batting at the top will benefit then he will open but someone is needed at number 3 and 4 to give the right balance. This means that he was ready to sacrifice his batting position for the team’s cause.

3. A great record as Indian captain

It’s not just IPL where the captaincy record of Rohit Sharma excels. He has done more than decent while captaining the Indian team. Team Indian even won the 2018 Asia Cup in the leadership of Rohit Sharma. To put things in perspective, let’s tell you his captaincy records in t20s. He has captained India in 19 T-20 games in which the team has won 15 and lost 4.

4. Rohit is empathetic, a must for a good leader

Rohit Sharma arranged passes for a Bangladesh’s fan to cheer his team during India’ series against Bangladesh in 2019. The Hit-Man went out of his way and met with Shoaib Ali Bukhari and within a few hours, got his pass ready so that the Bangladeshi fan could support his team.

5. He acknowledges his mistake

In the IPL final 2020, Rohit Sharma ran for a single, which was not to be. In the process, Surya Kumar Yadav was run out. However after the runout, Rohit’s face was owning up the mistake. Even in the post-match presentation ceremony, he said that with the kind of form, Surya Kumar Yadav was in, he should have been the one to sacrifice the wicket.
