Dutee Chand is the first Indian track and field athlete to win a gold medal in 100m in a global event


Indian athlete Dutee Chand has become the first track and field athlete to win a gold medal at the Summer Universiade, the World University Games. The 23-year-old clocked 11.32 seconds to defeat Del Ponte (11.33) from Switzerland and others and win gold at the global event.

She is now only the second sprinter from India to win gold in a global event. Hina Khan is the first one who clinched gold in 2018 at World Junior Athletics Championships.

Dutee had clinched silver medals in 100m and 200m in Asian Games last year. After Inderjeet Singh she is the second Indian track and field athlete to win a gold medal.

President and Chief Ministers lauded Dutee Chand for the Gold medal

People of India along with prominent people wished the runner for her amazing achievement. President tweeted  “Congratulations @DuteeChand for winning the 100m sprint at the Universiade, the World University Games, in Naples. This is India’s first such gold and a moment of immense pride for our country. Please keep up the effort, and look to greater glory at the Olympics #PresidentKovind.”

Chief Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh also congratulated and wrote “More Stellar performance! Congratulations @DuteeChand for winning the 100m sprint at the Universiade, the World University Games, in Naples. Keep chasing your dreams & making us all proud! #DuteeChand.”

Ashok Gehlot said to Dutee chand “You are an achiever”

Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot wrote “Congrats @DuteeChand for becoming the first Indian to win 100m #gold at Summer Universiade, the #WorldUniversityGames, in Naples. You are an achiever! Keep it up.”
