Moharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It mark the pious martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain the grandson of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) and the on of Hazrat Ali.
The tenth of Moharram is the day when Hazrat Imam Husain tasted Shahadat and saved Islam from the tyranny and clutches of Yazeed.
Hazrat Imam Hussain refused to accept the supremacy of Yazeed and said that nobody is Supreme except the Almighty who is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent.
This enraged Yazeed who asked Hazrat Imam Hussain to confront him in the battle of Karbala. Hazrat Imam Hussain accepted his challenge and went to Karbala along with all his near and dear ones that included even the women and children of his family.
The tyranny and oppression of Yazeed can be accessed from the fact that he did surrounded the group of Imam Hussain from all sides and blocked the passage to river Tigris and Euphrates. Yazeed deprived Imam’s family of water and killed six month-old child Hazrat Ali Asghar.
In total Yazeed’ army killed 72 individuals including Hazrat Imam Husain, his supporters and family. The children and women were taken as prisoners of war and were taken to Yazeed’s court in Damacus.
The sad tribute to the battle of Karbala begins from the first day of Moharram and lasts till the tenth day which is commonly known as ‘Ashura’.
‘Ashura’ literally implies number ten in Arabic language. So the tenth Moharram is very crucial for all Muslims. The shaheed-the martyr Hazrat Imam Hussain was assassinated on this day in the battle of Karbala.
Hazrat Imam Husain was born in 620 A.D. His parents were Hazrat Bibi Fatima and Hazrat Ali. He had an elder brother Hazrat Imam Hasan. He was the grandson Islam’ greatest and noblest Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH).
Yazeed was a tyrant who wanted to control the entire Islamic world. There was no one to oppose him except Hazrat Imam Hussain, who stood up against Yazeed and faced him.
Against a fully equipped army of 30,000 Hazrat Imam Hussain faced Yazeed with merely 72 men and showed Yazeed that he is not at all bothered or afraid of him and the might of Allah is above all.
‘So, on one hand Muharram is the ushering in of the new year for the Muslim community. One the other hand it is the time of mourning for their greatest hero, Hussain.’
