MS Dhoni can be handed contract if he is selected in the national team
#ThankYouMSDhoni, #MS Dhoni and #DhoniWeNeedYou was trending on 16th and 17th January after MS Dhoni was omitted from the BCCI Central Annual Contract list. Speculations started that MS Dhoni isn’t going to play in Blue Jersey anymore.
The BCCI annual player contracts are meant for those players who are available to play. And MS Dhoni has been in hibernation since the World Cup semi-final in 2019. He took a sabbatical for a few weeks to serve in the Indian Army’s Para Regiment in Kashmir. He was on Rs 5-crore, Grade A contract during the last one-year cycle.
There were murmurs, even within the BCCI on how a contracted player could make himself unavailable
There were murmurs, even within the BCCI on how a contracted player could make himself unavailable unless he was not 100 per cent fit. Dhoni did carry a back niggle to the World Cup that got aggravated during the course of the tournament. The former captain also picked up a wrist injury during the World Cup. But a contracted player needs to check-in at the National Cricket Academy for is rehab and recovery.
The Board for Cricket Control in India could not have given a contract to a player who is not playing currently. At the same time, losing the BCCI contract doesn’t mean that he is not going to play for India again.
Greatest finisher of cricket, MS Dhoni is long-retired from Test Cricket, and with the next World cup more than three years away, he no longer remains in the scheme of things for the longer format. The team is grooming Rishabh Pant, who is expected to fill the shoes vacated by Dhoni.
However, the ICC T20 World Cup will be played in October-November later this year in Australia. A very good IPL can change things for Dhoni. There must be a reason why MS Dhoni hasn’t retired from white-ball cricket. We have seen him retiring from Test Cricket from no-where in middle of a series in Australia. He also left Captaincy in limited-overs with same suddenness. There could be commercial angle too which is delaying Dhoni’s decision as he will be playing in IPL for CSK.
MS Dhoni can be given a central contract whenever he is selected in the national team. So Dhoni fans need not to worry about his omission from the annual contract of BCCI.
