MahaKumbh 2019: Significance of Holy Baths


MahaKumbh 2019 is currently going on in Prayagraj. Well, Kumbh Mela includes many auspicious rituals, one of them is bathing ritual. Millions of pilgrims take part in Kumbh bathing ritual at Triveni Sangam. According to mythology, the sacred bath in the holy water can help a person to get rid of his or her sins, it can release them and their ancestors from the vicious earthly cycle of life and death. It helps them to head towards the attainment of Moksha.

A lot of folk and cultural events are taking place in Prayagraj, and the city is in the full mood of celebration.  Special accommodations arrangements are available for the pilgrims.  The Government of Uttar Pradesh has introduced new routes for tourists visiting Prayagraj. Kumbh Mela takes place in four cities, including, Prayag, Ujjain, Nashik, and Haridwar. According to the planetary position, the venue of Kumbh is decided. MahaKumbh 2019 is taking place in Prayag because Jupiter is in Aries and Sun and Moon are in Capricorn.

Mahakumbh 2019: Here is a list of upcoming Holy bath and their significance

1. Makar Sankranti

As per Hindu calendar, this day marks the entry of Sun in its next astronomical position. This day also marks the beginning of donations at Kumbh Mela. Pilgrims can donate as per their will. First Holy bath at Kumbh 2019 will take place on January 15 on the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti

2. Paush Purnima

In the month of Paush, the 15th day of Shukla Paksha is known as Paush Poornima. It is another important day when you can take a holy bath. It signifies the rise of the full moon. This day marks the beginning of Kalpvasa. It will take place on January 21, 2019.

3. Mauni Amavasya

It is believed that on this day the planetary position is most favorable for Holy bath. It will fall on Feb 4 this year. On this day, Rishabh Dev, considered as the first sage broke his long vow of silence and took a holy bath.

4. Basant Panchami

It is auspicious in Hindu religion. The day indicates the changing season and marks the arrival of Goddess Knowledge Saraswati. People wear Yellow color clothes to mark the importance of this day. It will take place on February 10, 2019

5. Maghi Purnima

Maghi Purnima is associated with the worship of Guru Brahaspati. It is a belief that Hindu God Gandhavara travels from heaven to Sangam.  A lot of pilgrims take Holy bath on this day.  Maghi Purnima this year will fall on 19 Feb.

6. Mahashivratri

This is the last holy bath of the Kalpvasis and it is directly related to Shiva. As per mythology, this day is even awaited in heaven as well.

Here are Do’s and Don’ts for MahaKumbh 2019, take a look

  • Use dustbin for the disposal of garbage
  • Keep your emergency contacts handy
  • Don’t forget to carry medicines if advised by the doctor
  • Use only bathing areas/ ghats that are authorized by the Mela administration
  • Inform Police if you find any object or person suspicious

Don’ts

  • Don’t carry valuables, unnecessary food, and clothes
  • Don’t pollute river by using soaps and detergents
  • Don’t defecate in open. Use the toilets
  • Don’t provoke unnecessary conflicts
  • Don’t trust strangers and avoid using plastics
