In India, Kisan Divas or Farmer’s Day is celebrated on 23rd December every year.
The day marks the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh-the fifth Prime Minister of Indian Republic.
Charan Singh was born in a Jat family of Noorpur in 1902.
In 1950, he won election against Jawaharlal Nehru and became the Prime Minister of India.
India is basically an agricultural-dependent nation with nearly half of its population residing in villages. Agriculture is still the main occupation of the country. The green revolution transformed the agricultural landscape of the nation. The overall productivity has increased and India has become self sufficient and reliant in agro-commodities. States like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, etc. are dependent largely on agricultural revenues.
Farmers are the real backbone of the country. The birthday of Chaudhary Charan Singh is observed as Farmers Day or Kisan Divas. Charan Singh was also a farmer and his life was an example of simplicity.
Kisan Divas is a tribute to his contribution and valuable services rendered by Charan Singh to India.
On this day government launches new policies for the welfare of the farmers.
