Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Election Schedule likely to be announced today

Himachal Pradesh is governed by the Congress and it has 68 seats only. The tenure of the Gujarat Assembly term will end on January 22, 2018, while Himachal’s House ends on January 7, 2018 for elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. But the dates for Gujarat will be announced at a later date.

The congress has its 36 seats in the 68-member Himachal Pradesh Assembly and BJP has 26 only. The Himachal Lokhit Party had won 1 seat while Independents bagged 5. This party is governed by the Congress and Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh as the party’s chief ministerial candidate recently incited a revolt with most of the party’s 36 legislators threatening to side with him if he is not given a free hand to run the party’s campaign.

Mr. Singh, 83, is being investigated on corruption charges by the CBI. He has denied any wrongdoing. He has served as Chief Minister at the small hill state’s six terms. The election is seen very crucial for the Congress, as the state is one of its few strongholds in the country. The poll panel has delivered their date to a press conference to announce the schedule, as reported by a news agency.

Gujarat is also scheduled to go to polls later this year. The state has been governed uninterrupted by the BJP for nearly two decades. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun campaigning for his party in his home state and visited it last week. The BJP has 116 of 182 seats. Chief Amit shah has declared ‘Mission 150’, urging party workers to ensure that they “prove their gratitude to the Prime Minister” with even bigger tally of seats.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has spent this week campaigning in Gujarat too. He has called attention to the economic slowdown, the growing frustration over not enough jobs, and alleged that Mr. Shah’s son, Gujarat entrepreneur Jay Shah, has benefited from crony capitalism as a result of his father’s influence.
