100% renewable energy to be used for all google operations
World’s supreme search engine, Google believes that renewable energy is a very effective cost cutting measure and hence, has decided that all Google’s data centers as well as the offices shall be powered by renewable energy entirely from next year.
Google has called it the “landmark moment”.
Google was working on 44% of nuclear energy since last year, which shall be 100% in coming year.
A google executive confirmed the news and added that the internet giant would not exclude from investing in nuclear power in future as well. Google is already World’s biggest corporate buyer of wind and solar energy.
Marc Oman, Google’s EU energy leader while addressing the matter said, “We are convinced this is good for business, this is not about greenwashing. This is about locking in prices for us in the long term. Increasingly, renewable energy is the lowest cost option.”
If the reports are to be believed, the target to reach 100% usage for Google operations was set approximately 5 years ago, it took some serious negotiation on the company’s part to achieve the goal.
Google has admitted that despite the efforts to improve efficiency through AI, the primary thirst of power is insatiable. Therefore, Google is willing to sign a 10-year agreement for low-carbon power due to the falling prices of wind and solar energy.
When asked about the investment in nuclear energy, the executives implied the nuclear energy to be more ‘controversial’ with ‘dramatic’ safety issues in comparison to renewable energy.
The prices are also more difficult to ascertain for nuclear sources of energy which has made it Google’s second option for usage after renewable energy.
Oman added to his previous statements by saying, “Our founders are convinced, climate change is a real, immediate threat, so we have to do our part.”
