A recent remark over Prophet Mohammad from Nupur Sharma raised controversies in India. It gave birth to several fake news mongers waiting for the opportunity to erupt communal tensions in the state.
However, we managed to debunk some.
Here are four fake news stories from the series of Kisne Feka rose from the Nupur Sharma
The Increasing Muslim population will turn India into an Islamic state!
Kisne feka: Images of a large crowd are being shared with claims about Muslims increasing in Kolkata, how West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee is allowing this to happen, and that India will become an Islamic state if Hindus do not unite to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Foolproof: BaaghiTV published a news report on the event on January 3, 2021. The article reports that thousands of people attended the Chehlum remembrance and memorial service for Allama Khadim Hussain Rizvi, who died at age 54. Rizvi founded the far-right political party Tehreek-e-Labbaik in Pakistan.

Fake news: An image has gone viral claiming that a burqa-clad Qatari TV anchor is discussing religious freedom in India. Middle-eastern countries like Qatar, Iran, and Saudi Arabia express outrage over Nupur Sharma’s derogatory comment about Prophet Mohammed. This image is being shared as a sarcastic retort, implying that these countries don’t have religious freedom.
Foolproof: This viral claim is false. It’s not a Qatari female TV anchor, but Afghanistan-based TOLOnews TV anchor Khatereh Ahmadi. On May 19, the Taliban issued a non-negotiable statement that ordered all the female TV presenters and anchors of every Afghani media to cover their faces while on air.
“For those wondering about this iconic photo: Here is Khatera Ahmadi, one of our news presenters, preparing for a news bulletin – exhausted. Difficult breathing with a covered face,” Mohseni tweeted.

Kisne feka: A video showing a police officer lying on the ground in a pool of blood seemingly unresponsive state, has gone viral on social media. A rifle is lying beside the officer. The viral posts claim that in Kolkata, a police officer was killed by Muslim rioters, and they began threatening his partner following the incident. This incident allegedly occurred in the context of the protests that erupted after the Nupur Sharma controversy.
Foolproof: The viral claim is false. A report by Hindustan Times dated June 10, 2022. The thumbnail from the piece matches up with a snapshot from the viral video. Choudup Lepcha, 28, who was posted at Kolkata’s Park Circus, is alleged to have fired indiscriminately from his rifle, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to two others. The constable then shot himself in the neck.
The incident was not related to the protests over the Nupur Sharma controversy.

Fake news: A video of an elderly Muslim man being thrashed by cops is going viral on social media, claiming the viral video shows how cops are targeting Muslims. This comes after a communal clash erupted in UP after the controversial remark made by the BJP ex-spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
Foolproof: The viral claim is false. A tweet by Bareilly Police on Werleman’s twitter mentions that the viral video is from 2020 during the Covid lockdown. The tweet’s caption reads, “Concerned video was from 2020 when the complete lockdown was implemented. Unlawful gathering tried to misbehave with police and police used mild force to disperse the crowd so that COVID infection would not spread.”
