Dr. Subramanian Swamy, Whose Intellect Can’t Be Questioned

Here are the interesting Dr. Subramanian Swamy and why his intellect cannot be questioned

Dr. Subramanian Swamy may have turned 80, but he is never in a mood to slow down. His controversies, his interviews, and his outspoken nature have made him a consummate politician of contrary views. He is a relentless crusader and an opinionated academic.

Swamy is no stranger to controversies. He is among the list of politicians who is never afraid to slam even an ally. He made a name for himself by taking on the rich and powerful. Born on 15 September 1939, he is an Indian Politician, economist and statistician and also nominated member of parliament in Rajya Sabha.

The lists of his achievements do not stop here. So, here is a list of why Dr. Subramanyam Swamy should be the finance minister of India. And why his intellect cannot be questioned.

Swamy and his achievements and why he should be Finance minister

Swamy earned his Bachelors’ degree from Hindu College, Delhi University in mathematics. He took his Master’s Degree in Statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. For his doctorate, he went to Harvard University on a full Rockefeller scholarship. He received a Ph.D. in Economics in 1965. His thesis adviser was Nobel Laureate, Simon Kuznets.

In 1969, Dr. Subramanian Swamy was a professor of Mathematical economics at IIT Delhi but was sacked later by Indra Gandhi due to his economic opinions.

In 1986, he was a consultant to the World Bank.

Swamy worked towards normalizing Indochina relations. His relations with China are so strong that even Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh sought his views. Because of his efforts, Hindu devotees got access to Kailash Man Sarovar Yatra.

He also guided PV Narsimha Rao over economic blueprints in 1992.

Relation with controversies

In 1975, at the time of emergency, Swamy fled successfully to America after attending the parliamentary session. Although an arrest warrant was already issued against him.

Swamy also earned a sobriquet Chanakya of Indian politics. The period of 1966-1998 was very unstable for Indian politics. In 1998, Swamy called for a ‘chai party’. After that, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader J Jayalalithaa untied the coalition with Atal Bihari Vajpayee. As a result, the BJP government had to step down from the Ministry thrown.

In 1996, he filed a criminal complaint against former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J Jayalalitha. That led to her prosecution, conviction, and 4-year jail term.

In 2008, he exposed the multi-crore 2G scam implicating both former Telecom Minister A Raja and the EX-finance minister P. Chidambaram.

In 2012, he accused Sonia and Rahul Gandhi of committing fraud worth rupees 2000 crore in the National Herald case.

He targeted Sonia again on the AgustaWestland Scam in 2016. Swamy is also known for his sharp personal attacks against his political opponents particularly when it comes to Nehru-Gandhi Family.

If Swamy is considered mostly as an anti-corruption crusader and there is also the pro-Hindutva Champion facet in his personality.

In 2016, he filed a plea in the supreme court for the construction of Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya.

Swami’s political leanings have always been to the right. He was elected Rajya Sabha MP five times between 1974 and 1999. First on Jansung ticket and then by the Janta Party. He served as the president of the Janta party until 2013 when he joined BJP.

Swamy’s combating nature has been equally vicious for BJP also. On several occasions, he has openly taken on Bhartiya Janta Party. But despite all the frictions within the party, Dr. Subramanian Swamy stands as among the top leaders of the country.

This was Dr. Subramanian Swamy in all shades of grey.
