Amit Shah addressed the Rajya Sabha and proposed to revoke article 370
Indian Home Minister Amit Shah proposed to remove Article 370 in parliament which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Article 370 of the constitution is a temporary provision which gives special autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir. Announcement came after Narendra Modi held a cabinet meeting at his residence in New Delhi. This also comes after heavy turmoil in the Jammu and Kashmir over security reasons.
Internet services, phone services and cable services have been blocked in the valley amid the heavy turmoil and unprecedented lockdown. Politicians and former chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah are on house arrest since midnight.
Amit Shah was expected to talk about 35A but he talked about article 370
Reports earlier suggested that Amit Shah might talk about the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Second Amendment) Bill, 2019. It was also speculated that government will try to scalp section 35A from the state which gives some special rights to the people in J&K. Article 35A gives give the state to decide its permanent residents and grant them privileges in buying property in J&K , public sector jobs, , public aid & welfare and scholarships.
Amit Shah met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an hour just before the Cabinet meeting. A small meeting of selected senior cabinet ministers including Prime Minister, Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took place before the full cabinet meeting.
Heavy turmoil in valley, phone services and internet services blocked
These meetings are very important in context of the heavy turmoil in the valley. More than 35,000 troops have been moved in the Kashmir in last few days. The government earlier launched an unusual advisory which asked Amarnath pilgrims and tourists to leave the place. The advisory spiked a fear in valley and residents started stocking up the essentials and fuel.
