The canola oil and olive oil are known for their culinary usefulness and extraordinary health benefits. Their consumption is a natural way to combat chronic illnesses, as suggested by a study.
The study showed that the intake of both the oils- the canola and olive oils (have high mono unsaturated fatty acids) was effective in lowering weight, waist circumference and decreasing liver fat, triglycerides and lipids.
Dr Anoop Misra, the director and head of the department of diabetes and metabolic diseases, Fortis Group of Hospitals stated, “If the different traditional Indian oils used across the country are replaced by olive or canola oil, it can lead to multiple health benefits.”
Details of The Study
A study was carried out by the researchers from the Diabetes Foundation of India and National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation, in order to analyze the impact of various cooking mediums in individuals with multiple abnormalities.
For the study 90 people were tracked for a period of six months with high blood pressure, abdominal obesity and fat accumulation in the liver.
The participants were grouped in three different groups and were told to consume olive oil, canola or any other refined oil.
The participants were also asked to take 55-60 percent carbohydrates, 15-20 percent fat in their regular daily diet.
They were also asked to walk briskly for 30-40 minutes daily.
Revelations of The Study
After six months a follow-up was done that showed a marked reduction in body weight, waist circumference and liver fat among individual s consuming olive oil.
On the contrary individuals consuming canola oil showed a reduction in waist circumference and increase in insulin resistance, reduction in lipids, liver fat and triglycerides.
The group consuming other oils except those using soybean and sunflower does not exhibited any important changes.
Anoop Misra mentioned, “The study has important implications for Indians, who are at a greater risk of acquiring diabetes and heart diseases. Just by changing to metabolically-friendly oil, we can avert several chronic and lethal diseases,”
The study findings have been communicated to the ‘American Journal of Nutrition’.
