The carnival in Brazil continues, it has been one of the most exciting and riveting World Cups in recent times which has seen the underdogs overpowering the favourites. Some of the World Cup contenders have already bowed out of the tournament. Spain being on top of that list, the last edition’s winners have broken many hearts as they crashed out in the first round. Following their European colleagues are England who will catch the flight back to their homeland, making no impact in any of their games except the one against Italy. Italy on the other hand performed well but fell against a pumped up Costa Rica side, losing their place in the last 16.
Colombia has surprised everyone by playing remarkable football, winning each of their three matches against Greece, Cote d’Ivoire and Japan. Other team which deserves a lot of praise is Algeria showing a lot of heart and making their place in the Round of 16.
It has been a record breaking World Cup when it comes to goals with 136 in total. Some of them have been scintillating with players like Arjen Robben, van Persie and Lionel Messi performing at par with their reputation. Here is a list of five goals that we at OneWorldNews think were the best of the lot.
1. Van Persie (Flying Dutchman) against Spain
This header of his will be regarded as one of the best goals ever seen at the World Cup finals. Words can’t describe it, you will have to see it for yourself.
2. Messi (Argentina) against Iran
No questions on quality, but this goal is on the list more because of its timing. Scored in extra-time Messi-ah sealed the victory for his country getting them 3 points.
3. Tim Cahill (Australia) against Netherlands
Easily one of the best matches in the tournament it had a classy 3-2 score line. With the help of an exhilarating volley he equalised for his team and gave them a chance to win against last edition’s finalists. Though the Socceroos eventually lost, Tim Cahill’s goal stood out.
4. Jermaine Jones (USA) against Portugal.
A do or die match for USA, they had to at least draw to proceed in the tournament. On the other hand Portugal had a very slim chance of qualifying but they were playing more for their pride. This long range effort was a blinder which left the keeper standing still.
5. Musa (Nigeria) against Argentina
This goal defines precision and placement added to that outstanding skill and presence of mind. Musa gave the Argentinians and the viewers a heart-attack after scoring this thrilling goal.
