TN government extends maternity leave from six to nine months
Soon after an announcement made by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in Assembly, the Tamil Nadu Government on Monday issued an order extending maternity leave for women government employees from the current six months to nine months.
Earlier, on 1 September Ms Jayalalithaa had announced in the Assembly that her government would soon increase the maternity leave from the existing 180 days to 270 days for the interest of working women.
Before also it was the AIADMK government under Ms Jayalalithaa in 2011 that increased the maternity leave from prevailing 90 days to 180 days.
The Government Order read
The new Government Order (GO) dated November 7, 2016, stated that this new policy will be applicable to all married women government employees with less than two surviving children.
Increasing the maternity leave for working government women was a promise that the AIADMK party made to the people of Tamil Nadu in the run -up to the May 16 Assembly elections. “The AIADMK Government, after careful cognition, based on its announcement made in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by the Respected Chief Minister on 01.09.2016, beneath rule 110 of the Legislative Assembly Rules ordered that the maternity leave provided to married women government servants with less than two surviving children, which is 6 months (180 days) at present, be increased to 9 months (270 days),” the order stated.
The maternity leave might be unrolled over the “pre-confinement rest to post-confinement recuperation, at the choice of the women Government servant, the order said, adding that those under their maternity leave at present are also eligible for 270 days of leave.
Despite no gain; Private sector women are also happy
Though the order was strictly restricted only to government employees, women working in the private sector were also happy about the decision.
Well, this is definitely a welcome change and of course it will be also very beneficial for the pregnant women.
