Since few months, the government of West Bengal has been focusing on increasing the transparency through providing facilities on the internet. In the second week of June the state ministry of food and supplies announced an online submission to attain food licenses. The food department grants license for ration shops, kerosene retailing, fair price shops and LPG dealerships. This step is being predicted as an attempt to stop corruption in the process of issuing license by the department.
To introduce more, the state food and supplies minister, Jyotipriyo Mullick told, “This new system will be functional from November this year. This will have two benefits. The first is that the people willing to avail food department license will not have to take the trouble to come to the department office and this will also do away with the corrupt practices that are involved in the license issuing process”.

As announced, under the new system, the interested people will have to apply as well as pay the license fees online. And for the transaction, the person should have a debit or credit card.
Earlier, the state govt. had already introduced the system where the public can register their grievances and complaints against the department on a website. The public can also view the status of their submitted complaint.
This initiative under the governance of Mamata Banerjee is appreciable but how efficiently it will be implemented is yet to be seen.
