After suffering a crushing defeat in their opening match of the world cup against New Zealand and a close match with Afghanistan, Sri Lanka finally looked to be back in sorts with a convincing 92 run victory over Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka batted first and looked good right from the start. Dilshan played some terrific pull shots and splendid straight drives. Thirmanne and Dilshan put up a 100 run partnership for the opening stand. Thirmanne was caught at third man soon after completing his half century. Then came Sangakarra to the wicket. He looked in sublime touch playing some spectacular shots at a healthy strike rate. He along with Dilshan scored a century and helped Srilanka reach a par score of 332 in the allotted 50 overs.

Tamim Iqbal and Haque opened for Bangladesh. Taking Iqbal’s wicket early on in the innings was crucial for Sri Lanka as he is a dangerous batsmen and has a impressive strike rate in International cricket. That’s exactly what they did. They got Iqbal out on the second delivery courtesy a stellar delivery by one and only Malinga. There on Sri Lanka managed to take wickets quite consistently. Even though Bangladesh were maintaining a good run rate but the falling wickets weren’t helping their cause. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hassan and Sabbir Rahman played some delightful strokes scoring 46 and 53 respectively. Bangladesh were all out for 240 runs.

Tillakaratne Dilshan was awarded the Man of the Match for his all round effort. He scored 161 not out and took 2 wickets.

It was a mixed match for Sri Lanka in terms of the positives and negatives. On one hand the fans would be relieved to see Dilshan and Sangakarra back in form and Malinga finally showing signs of his best by throwing in those classic Yorkers he is known for. But, on the other hand their fielding seemed quite ordinary. They dropped a couple of straight forward chances and also missed out on a lot of run outs.

Putting down catches can prove costly and turn the match around as we have seen in this World Cup so far. They would have to work on it keeping in mind they face England next on the 1st of March.
