The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti on Friday launched a “Scooty for College Girls Scheme”.
As a part of the launch function, Mufti took a ride on the Scooty in a bid to popularise its use.
Mufti distributed the Scooties at two all women colleges- the Women’s College Parade and the Women’s College Gandhi Nagar.
Both colleges have been provided with 150 scooties each. Under the scheme, 312 applications were received from the Women’s College Gandhi Nagar. However only 150 were selected.
The eligiblity criteria for a Scooty was based on the minimum percentage of the student(i.e. 65%) and its annual family income (i.e. Rs. 4 lakh).
Earlier in the month of May, the state government had announced that it will be taking many women specific initiatives, and one among them was the “CM Scooty Scheme”.
According to a statement attributed to the state finance minister Dr. Haseeb A. Drabu in May, “All College going girl students will be provided a 50 percent subsidy on the purchase of a Scooty.”He then stated that “The whole idea is to make girls independent in terms of mobility.”
