According to a report, to protect the rights of sex workers, a supreme court panel recently said that adults “participating with consent” should not face any criminal proceedings and police interference.
As per a panel member, voluntary sex work is not illegal in India only running the brothel unlawful. So sex workers should not be harassed or victimized during the raid.
Notably, The panel has also recommended to delete the offence of “soliciting” Under the section 8 of the immoral Traffic Prevention Act 1956. According to which sex workers cannot seduce someone and if they do it is a punishable offence with six months jail and a fine of RS. 500.
If we take a look data majority of sex workers in India often forced to join prostitution because of poverty. So to safeguard their rights and to provide them equal rights the court has suggested that police should register complaints of sex workers.
