With the growing ‘intolerance’ in the country and the killing of the Kannada writer MM Kalburgi , a total of 35 writers returned their Akademi awards as a sign of protest.
The Akademi has decided not to encash the cheques of the writers who have returned their awards. This is being done as the Akademi does not want to accept the return of the awards.
The secretary of the Akademi Sreenivas Rao also said that the institution is “for the writers, by the writers and of the writers” and has decided to not take back the awards. He also said that giving awards is an celebration and no institution thinks of taking it back “while conferring them.”
